"Go shoot some place up and we will make you famous."

Basically their message. Fuck you yahoo news, cnn, abc, fox, and whoever the fuck else is making these scum bags famous. We don't need to know who they were, what they looked like, or why. If anything, they should be making stories about the victims.

I agree that the attention they get likely inspires the next shooting. Sad...

People have been saying this since Columbine. I remember at one point there was a movement to get news outlets to stop releasing the shooter's name and photo if he's already been killed or captured. Obviously that didn't work

It's way too juicy in the combined celebrity worship and clickbait era to simply ignore the shooter's internet history and miss the opportunity to paint him as some sort of dark anti-hero.

The news media is awful but not a scapegoat.

US news media is global yet it's mass shooting epidemic is not.

hell There are few outlets less sensationalistic than the uks daily mail or Australia's courier mail .still few mass shootings

It's the US fun culture that is the culprit. Media is a symptom not a cause

Its not going to happen with todays identity politics.

The very first thing people want to know is which side the bad guy was on, so we can associate all political opponents with the bad guy.

Also remember when that news crew was killed by a shooter? The station they worked for suddenly decided "we wont tell you shit about the shooter, their identity or why they did it. Lets focus on the victims."

Wonder how long that lasted. >_>

Honestly though I disagree with the implication of this topic that the public has no right to know information about the killer.

Whine all you want about sensationalism, people DO deserve to know who the killer was, where he went, where the killer lived, where the attack took place.

How would you feel if your 14 year old daughter went to the same club that 3 rapists and 2 killers hung around at, and you didn't know?

Hell we already have a big big issue with holiday makers and travel agents not telling people how dangerous some locations are when they offer great deals.

The media has a responsibility to give information to the people, the last thing we need is people saying "Hey media, don't tell us stuff because I fear I am so utterly stupid that I don't deserve to hear it." because that's such an utterly dangerous stance.

May as well roll over so the government can step on the other side of your face.

And that's BEFORE you touch on the fact that the media is not even the thing causing the US' gun crime and mass killing epidemic.
