before the 6's and 7's come in tomorrow because you know they're coming, let's all enjoy Famitsu's review of 9/9/9/8

1st reviewer: This Sonic is aimed for adults with a hype story that opens with a serious development and has allies and enemies throughout the series gathering. In addition to the hearty high-speed actions on both 3D stages where you go deep and 2D side-scrolling stages, this game has an exclusive fun factor with usage of weapons and a playthrough where you can switch between up to 3 characters. You can create an Avatar as the players personification, and its also nice that they can be freely customized. 9

2nd reviewer: The design that retains the deep replay value and challenges while catching up on the exhilarating and speedy feels are amazing, as it allows anyone to feel good when playing it. You can create your own personification with the Avatar, and having them fight together with Sonic also gives freshness; the actions that use Wispons are also interesting. In stages where Sonic and the Avatar work together, the W.Boost has a pleasant feel in the dash, and the lovely BGMs fit every place and will raise your tension. 9

3rd reviewer: The dramatic [story] development is nice, since it once again recognizes the coolness of Sonic. The gimmicks that have excellent speedy feels, and the smooth transition from 3D to side-scrolling is also cool. Even in the same area, when the characters and gimmicks change you will feel a different sensation in playing it. With the Avatar-exclusive weapons you can taste the exhilaration of mowing enemies, and the tricky movement abilities are also interesting. There is also a variation of costumes. For the Classic Sonic, being able to use the Dash that originated from Sonic Mania is also nice. 9

4th reviewer: By implementing the Avatar Character, it has an uniqueness which is enjoying special movement and attack methods that Sonic doesnt have. You can taste a sensation of playing [the game] thats different from the past series, and the gameplay breadth also got larger. This game has an impression of getting closer to a straight high-speed action, and you can fully feel the exhilaration even more easily. I dont deny Sonics uniqueness of becoming complicated due to getting too fast, but this game is well done to tightly stuff in strategy with the epitome of action. 8

Anyway I've been worried about this game ever since it was shown because it seemed to have a Sonic Heroes influence to it. I still remember how disappointed I was with that game out of the gate coming off of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. The controls just always felt off and controlling so many characters at once I just felt didn't work.

On the other hand it looked infinitely better than Lost World and Boom so I've been starved for 3D Sonic so totally playing it day 1 regardless of how it scores.

If it's just Sonic Generations with unique levels/stories I'm in.

Although every level I've seen so far the characters never shut the fuck up and that could be a problem.

I was thinking 73 personally. Like it should score around Generations levels (77-79) but with Mania coming out earlier this year a few places will score it lower.

You can turn it off, thankfully. It makes the game way more enjoyable.

7/10 sounds right. The story brings it down, but the gameplay is fine and the levels are short enough that trying to do the time trials and collectibles is fun.

Yeah but Sonic games are graded on an unfair curve so a Sonic getting in the low 70's is like a normal game getting in the low 80's.

Sonic Mania was amazing and it finished, what, 84? 86?

One thing that I haven't been enjoying is that when Sonic gets hit he just loses his rings. He doesn't drop them and have a chance to pick them back up, they're just gone. They saved that just for hedgehog avatars. It leads to a weird situation during boss fights, where it's actually better to leave rings onscreen uncollected so you have something to pick up when you get hit.

But the regular levels, especially the Modern Sonic ones, are excellent. I wish they'd stop having these other characters, even Classic Sonic, and just make Colors 2 where it's all Modern Sonic. Or even just put out an HD port of Colors.

I mean when a game reviewing website comes out and says "Sonic was never good" you know they're pretty damn biased since they had to walk back that comment.

Then you are incorrect....

Sonic Colors is one of the top 3 or 4 games for the Wii, and generations is astoundingly good.

I'm
Obviously a huge LoZ fan, so this isn't an attack on LoZ, but if Sonic Generations were called Legend of Zelda generations Blue Hedgehog story, the reviewers would be very confused.... but they would still give it 92 or 93s.... Becausr that is what the game rightfully was. But because it was Sonic it was punished immensely and got around 8s usually.

The reviews of Sonic games made me come to a firm conclusion of how awful video game reviewers are. Sonic 2006 actually got a lot of great reviews despite being a game that looked like it didn't even come out of beta. That's because reviewers were "conditioned" to give long-running popular series like Sonic good reviews no matter what they thought of it. After that game became infamous for being terrible, the reviews for later games were rated worse (worse than '06!) despite being arguably good. Maybe you can excuse Unleashed getting bad reviews for the Werehog gameplay, but Colors was genuinely a return to form that got middling reviews because it still had the stigma of "Sonic games are bad now" on it. However Sonic games started regaining their respect again after that, so when Generations came out the reviews rated it higher, saying that the games had finally gotten good again, when the gameplay was basically on par with Colors and Unleashed's daytime stages. It's moronic.

Video game reviewers don't even bother having their own opinion, they just copy whatever public opinion is, but unfortunately are always behind. Since Lost World and Boom soured the series in people's minds I don't doubt that the reviews for this one will suffer no matter what the quality of it actually is.

I would like to point out that the review different between Unleashed and Sonic 2006 was 11-14 points. Which isn't a huge difference in terms of scoring.

Sonic 2006 was a broken nearly unplayable mess whereas Unleashed was a solid, if flawed by one crucial design choice, game.

Like these games shouldn't even in the same hemisphere score wise yet they are.

It's like Fire Emblem Warriors this year. It's probably one of the best Warriors game made and it could only crack upper 60's due to inherent bias against the series. Yet one of the better reviewed games in the series was Hyrule Warriors, largely helped out by the inherent Zelda bias.

There are certainly series whose pedigree effects review scores. Warriors and Sonic games are indeed among them, and it goes both ways. Berseria, for example, was never going to rate higher than XV under any circumstance, but I think most genre fans who have played both will agree that Berseria is the better game in just about every way other than graphical power and music, depending on taste for the latter. Yet Final Fantasy is the "big release" and Berseria is "just another Tales game".

Actually a lot of the scores were revised after a while because they wised up that no one was going to be bothered if they said the game was shit. I forget which came first, the Xbox or Playstation version, but I recall the second release getting way lower scores even from the same sites, which kind of confirmed the inconsistency of it all.

IGN, Gamespot, and Game Informer all rated Sonic 06 significantly higher than Unleashed (going by reviews for 360 versions of both).

IGN: 4.8, 4.5
Gamespot: 4.4, 3.5
Game Informer: 6.75, 6.0

Aggregators don't tell the full story. There's lots of reviews from sites nobody reads, many of which don't even get published until months after public opinion has already solidified. Major review sites still matter, and they mattered even more ~10 years ago when these games came out.

Disagree, Colors had way more stages and they were all the superior Modern Sonic style. Generations had better graphics and nostalgia, but was a smaller game overall.

Generations 3DS was actually my preference over the console version.
