I absolutely adore Tolkien and the Peter Jackson LOTR series, but after the Hobbit Trilogy, I have no more hope and want to see things just not be pulled back and forth like Star Wars.

When the best part of your last trilogy was a Ed Sheeran song, it's time to shelve it.

Yeah I don't either, I can't see it getting the budget needed for everything to look as good, and there's no way they can top the casting

A series would be better if you do a more straight adaptation of the books, but nobody will ever do that. It'll probably be more different than the films were.

Amazon has money and is specifically changing up their production strategy because it wants the next game of thrones

I'm pretty sure it'll be awesome if they can ink a deal. It would be much, much better as a series than as movies imo

The Black Company could make a decent series, though.

I don't see the point. The movies are definitive IMO.

A series based on LOTR, after we've already had the books and an excellent movie trilogy? No thanks.

A series set during a different time of the Tolkien-verse? Yes please. Hell, they can even do what the video games are doing and make them non-canon so they can do literally anything they want with it. Or make it canon and try to tie it all together with the lore. Either way, it's a risk and Tolkien nerds will lose their minds, but it'd be cool to see for me. I'd love to see the universe expanded on in movies or TV, but not the same story for the millionth time.

You guys are crazy, those movies have aged terribly and they are way too long.

The casting was excellent for the main characters, but awful for a lot of the supporting roles imho

They would probably need to draw on the appendices and other materials outside LotR proper to justify it though, that's true

Never read the books and wasn't a huge fan of the movies because they were just kind of bland IMO. I think like most books, a TV show would be much better. I don't know why everyone is talking shit. I thought the fans of the books hated the movies?

I feel like some of the stuff in the Appendices could be interesting if expanded upon. Like the entire history of Gondor in the Third Age was pretty neat in my opinion.

Nah I think most fans of the books still do like the films. I just read the books for the first time recently and also rewatched the movies these past couple days. The books are obviously better, but the movies are still great. Particularly for the battle scenes. Helm's Deep was not the most interesting battle in the books.

Thanks for clearing that up

I still stand by that I think TV shows are the best way to do book adaptions. Ender's Game as a movie was shit, but I think it would be great as a TV show. Game of Thrones would have been terrible as movie, IMO

People keep acting like the books are super long. Together they're around the same length as one volume in ASoIaF (Game of Thrones). There's not really a lot of material.

Lord of the rings is like 1200 pages, none of the ASoIaF books are that long. GoT is about half that.

1200 pages is including the appendix, no? That's Storm of Swords length, approximately.

While I completely disagree, every one of those parts are super short because the pace in the books is quite high.

There was a LotR parody comic series a while back, 'DM of The Ring' it's a D&D campaign that uses LotR setting, in which Aragorn thinks Legolas is a girl. If Amazon are looking for their 'Game of Thrones', then slash fiction could be the place to start.
