@pinky0926 I assume you know how to pick out a good scarf

I've never owned a scarf but I have been noticing more dapper looking fellows rocking scarves.

Go cashmere only or is wool fine? Should I based the color off the coat I typically wear in the winter or something else? Is there such a thing as too long for scarves? What about width?

What is your climate? If it's just slightly chilly but you want an accessory to your wardrobe, then pick something that's relatively thin and breathable, even a cotton scarf is fine . If it's really fucking cold then you want thick wool. Cashmere if you can afford it, but it's not necessary unless you really want to feel soft fabric on your chin.

Base it off the colours you typically wear in winter and you imagine wearing with a scarf. If you have one winter jacket, choose something that works with that. Some rules of thumb might be 1) avoid solid black scarfs, 2) avoid saturated colours, 3) avoid garish patterns. I find a light patterned (e.g. checked) white/grey scarf works with almost any outfit.

From a functional point of view yes. If you want to be some kinda high fashion goth ninja then no. Most scarfs will be fine. if anything the occasional scarf is too short. Not something you generally have to worry about though.

What about width?

Doesn't particularly matter, if it's on the wide side you can fold it over easily enough.

All this said and done, just make sure the ends don't line up perfectly. See this guy:

Scarf ends are slightly offset as they should be. Incidentally this is also the kind of scarf that will work for most outfits.

Seattle, from what I understand it is basically the same climate as London.

I do really bundle up in the winter so it at least is cold to me.

I think that means thick cashmere is a must for me.

my coat is a brown (a bit darker than camel but in that family) pea coat. Normally wear black, navy, charcoal or olive trousers and long sleeve button ups of various colors.

that look is close to what I am wanting, but I don't know if I trust $8 cashmere things to have any quality so I doubt I would buy that specific one.

(hopefully those links work, had to shorten them)

another general look.

Overall I like plaids but the difference between a garish plaid and a non-garish one, not sure I am good at deciphering them.

I have a number of outfits I think that would work well with since it has red accents. don't trust oversea sellers but this might work.

London is cold however I find it to be quite muggy with moisture. You might find that a very thick scarf will feel stifling and sweaty after not very long. Even in Edinburgh weather, I usually choose my lighter scarf simply for the breathability. Ultimately your choice though. I would prefer to choose two cheaper scarfs over one (one light, one heavy), so that on the day I could decide if I need one scarf over the other.

Scarfs look good, however this isn't really something you need to buy online. Most shops sell scarfs, a bit of browsing won't hurt.

Given the colour of coat and clothes you gave, I'd simply stick to earth and neutral colours.

I think you could achieve the same effect with any knitted scarf to be honest. No doubt this scarf is nice, but if you went looking for knitted scarfs you'd find all sorts of things in the same ballpark that aren't remotely as expensive.
