I finally got tested this year after a couple years worth of waking up gasping for breath once in a great while (every six months or so). When I did the at-home sleep study, my AHI (the number of times you wake per hour) was a very high 37, so they got me on a CPAP ASAP (which was still like five months since the initial visit with my primary provider to get the referral to get the ball rolling). I got used to the machine almost immediately. After the first night, my husband said he didn't even notice I was in the bed because it had stopped my snoring. After about a week, my AHI started averaging below 5, with some nights even going below 2.

Never got treated, cant afford it, but it is pretty bad. I have recorded myself sleeping a few times and it sounds like a dying man struggling to take his last breath and it can be heard entirely throughout a 2000 square foot house when sleeping in a closed room. It leads to many naps and occassionally even a black out.

I know someone who has a CPAP and he said he feels so rested in the morning. His wife said it's very quiet. He also did the sleep test at home.
