Divorced parents both remarried so I come from a two household environment and I never went without so I'll assume 4 people's income combined was definitely over 100K

Not wealthy at all. I'm going to gross $100k+ this year by myself, but I live in the Baltimore/DC metro.

It was up and down. My parents are immigrants and my dad worked his way from making minimum wage as a back room stocker to pulling $150k as a VP. Then was laid off and started his own company. Did very well until the economic crisis and had to shut down. Now both my parents are unemployed and broke. Mostly because they didnt manage money well at all.

You're upset TC made a metric and it didn't fit what you wanted. Stop acting like it's anything else.

Also lol at bitching about the cost of living being unbearable with a 100k income in a topic asking about people who were raised with less than that.

Yes but not by that metric.

My dad made $52k when I graduated high school. Mom never worked.

Which, if you're in a good spot in terms of debt like they were, is not too shabby at all in small town Alabama.

Agreed. They have no concept of saving or retirement. Theyre both equally terrible at money management. Its really sad because it rubbed off on both my siblings. My sister is 29 and already in 20k credit card debt. My brother is probably in 80k debt. Partially because he stupidly tried to help my dads sinking business but he still spends like hes some baller.

what was his company about?

Keeping it general, it was in the finance industry. So when we got into a recession, it hurt him big time and since he was a small family owned company, he couldnt compete with the larger ones.

My mom works a pretty meh paying job these days but my dad and 5 other guys were laid off from the same place started a business and are making big money. I'm not even sure how much since he is such a pessimist but it's got to be 100k a year easy.

No. My parents were both high school drop outs who had kids too early. Got worse after my mother divorced my father out of the blue. Totally blindsided him. I guess she had a midlife crisis because for a couple years, we started spending a lot of nights with babysitters while she went out and dad just wasn't really around anymore.

Not over $100,000 combined, but if you factor in the cheap cost of living we definitely lived better than a family living off that much in a much larger city. I think cost of living was about 70% the national average, with some things like houses nearly a third as cheap as larger cities.

They brought in about $90,000 a year over the course of my childhood, and now bring in about $60,000 a year.

I really don't know why some people aren't understanding this. Yes $100K is a lot of money. But cost of living in particular areas determines if that means your wealthy. Someone with $100K in Mississippi is wealthy. Someone with $100K in downtown NYC is not wealthy. This is some pretty basic shit

You keep pretending like we don't know this.

Fine, I guess since you need it that badly we'll specify.

I'm in San Diego and was raised on a single 40k income. Gonna bitch about cost of living now (as if that's relevant to pretty much anything). We get it, if you live in NYC 100k isn't wealthy, it's fucking well off though so stop being disingenuous for fucks sake.

100k isn't wealthy. It buys you a nice house and gets you a consistent amount of money in the bank, but doing something like buying a brand new car is still a major life decision. Buying a brand new corvette or other expensive model is pretty much out of the question. If you were an idiot and did something stupid like get caught with cancer without insurance 100k/year isn't enough to avoid bankruptcy.

I think Obama had it right when he said back in 2008 that 250k/year is wealthy.

Let's talk about this. What state and city were you in? What was the income?

You go on vacations ever? Take family trips? Have new clothes for the school year? Did you go to amusement parks or fairs? Did you have game systems within a year they came out?

I never received handouts but no one I know did anything I mentioned. So, did they have it easier? Lets hear about that childhood that was so much harder than those people eligible for handouts.

I Was comfortable ya. 40k in San Diego depends on where you choose to live, you'll be broke in Del Mar or Mission Valley and fine in El Cajon or Lakeside. In my experience that's the case with most cities that are majorly enough to have a high cost of living.

You're such a child. It's a metric in a topic where no one specified where they actually live. If 100k isn't enough where you live then take the advice from your party and go somewhere else.

So what's wealthy? Wealth in excess? How much excess.

Most of the country lives far under that line. So what's wealthy? To my knowledge there's no objective definition of the term and it was set at 100k in the topic which enraged everyone, apparently.

So why don't you set the metric then.
