it's been a long time since I've done this. actually, I can't even remember ever not tipping in the last 12 years. a lot of times I'll even tip at places where it's not super expected or common. this was also specifically a case where I'm satisfied with the general quality and service of the restaurant and the driver was the one who I was not satisfied with. so I think it was overall fitting. I know if the restaurant messes up it's unfair to not tip the driver. but if the driver messes up it seems like it's fine to not tip him. maybe I'm just becoming more petty.

I think the fear of being mistaken for "someone who doesn't tip" instead of "someone who doesn't tip if the service is bad" definitely prevents people (myself included) from withholding tips when it is warranted. it's not like the driver or waiter is often going to admit he is in the wrong. so essentially he'll just go back and tell everyone that I'm a customer who doesn't tip. in this case though I'm not too worried since I don't plan to order from this restaurant again.

I'm also going to hold my receipt and wait a few days. I've been friends with drivers in the past who have admitted to me that if a person doesn't tip they will sometimes write something on the receipt. if I see any odd results on there (like my bank statement not matching the receipt) I'm planning on calling to report him.

I always leave special directions on my orders and for the second consecutive time this same driver failed to follow my orders. He also made a really annoying request of me while he was here. More the first thing, though. I can't in good conscience tip someone who is literally incapable of following simple directions.

That's why I draw a line through or write "Cash" on the tip line and write the total with nothing added whenever I don't tip on my card.

without giving too much detail I need the driver to alert me when they get here. knocking on the door will not work. I assume my requests aren't too unreasonable since the drivers can follow directions 95% of the time.

I said something to him about it last time, he came and didn't alert me again this time. no tip.

While im college I once made a guy wait outside while I went and got exact change after my gift card was not enough.

It was about 15 degrees out and just got done snowing and I took over a minute.

I told him to have a good night and be safe while he was walking to his car.

A minute after I closed the door I realized what I did. TBQH ive kind of felt bad about it since.

there's a space while ordering where you put in specific instructions if you need to. if he doesn't check to see if someone put instructions then this reflects poorly on him. also as I stated above I mentioned this to him last time he was here and he did the same thing again.

How many other deliveries do you think he has taken since the last time you ordered and you had to talk to him about your special directions. To him you are 1 of a hundred random faces until you become the problem house. Still would like to know why you can't just answer the door when they knock?

uhh presumably he can't hear the door from where he sits? and if there is a space on the order form for request to driver, his entire fucking job consists of 1. drive to place 2. read instructions and he's skipping out on one part of that job

Because you don't know the request made it to him and it is your responsibility to be ready when he gets there because you are the one who ordered the food. "Surprise the food you ordered is here! " If you order food for delivery it is your responsibility to be ready when it gets there.

You should be close enough to the door to hear somebody knocking. That is totally on you. We also don't know that you properly filled out the form, or that the info made it onto the receipt. Maybe the printer only printed the top half, maybe the ticket got torn, maybe you messed up when filling it all out. Shit happens. Your special instructions don't have to get to the delivery driver. If you order the food, be ready when it gets there.

If you order delivery in a college town, every single place asks for your number so that they can call you when they arrive.

Even if you live in an apartment or house, they'll still call you out of procedure.

I mean, nobody forced them to order delivery. They placed the order, they're expecting the delivery, they should make whatever preparations are necessary so that they can accept the delivery in a reasonable fashion. If they can't get up from what they're doing and come to the door right away, they should go to the door in advance.

Special instructions are one thing, but people saying they should be calling on every order are ridiculous. That's gonna add 1-2 minutes per delivery, which doesn't sound like a lot but if you have 5 orders, last guy's order is now 10 minutes late. This guy fucked up and sounds like he doesn't care (or just forgot) but also shit does happen. I've been stiffed/yelled at more times for being slightly late than not calling, so I'm in any sort of hurry, guy who wants a call is probably going to deal with a knock or two before I go for the phone.

But as you pointed out yourself, real reason not to tip for bad service is that he'll just think you're an asshole. When I got a 0 tip I usually have no idea if the person is just a jerk or if I actually messed something up. Writing a note on the receipt or calling to complain is much more effective. You still look like an asshole, and maybe they still dont give a shit, but they can actually fix the issue or chew out the employee. With feedback, no tipping is fine (UNLESS it's tipshare, unlikely for delivery) but without you're just saying you were slightly inconvenienced but don't actually care that much.

Personal anecdote, feel free to ignore, but when I worked delivery, there was a regular customer who would always get a Dr Pepper with ice in a separate cup, plus some other custom order. Every delivery driver there ended up memorizing her ordering ticks and address so that the order went well. This wasn't for the tip, because she would only tip small amounts randomly when it was convenient for her. But if anything was wrong, she'd call to complain and waste everyone's time. No one liked her but we got her weird orders right most of the time because the squeaky wheel gets the grease in the service industry.
