...Ignore this person and dress your children up however you want. Many liberals (the non crazy ones) will be dressing their kids up Moana because no one knows, nor cares, who this person is. Nor should they. I'm bored with "this person has a blog or a Twitter account and therefore represents all of this group" thing. It's lazy on all sides.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/10/23/halloween-cultural-appropriation-questions/780479001/

Susan Scafidi, author of Who Owns Culture: Appropriation and Authenticity in American Law, said the debate really took off in 2015 when Yale warned its students not to wear certain costumes on Halloween, provoking "a moment of outrage on both sides that really polarized the issue," she said.

OK, but what about the thousands of white kids who want to dress up like a character from Moana for Halloween?

Scafidi said to determine whether you may be crossing a line, look at the Maui costume Disney pulled off its shelves.

"This costume was essentially his brown skin with the tattoos and the little loincloth in the middle. And people looked at it and said, 'you know, I'm not sure if having a child of some other color wearing this character's brown skin to masquerade is necessarily very respectful or a good idea.'"

Disney Pulled That Offensive Moana Costume. Heres Why It Matters.

Less than a week after Disney debuted kids costumes for their upcoming film Moana, the company has pulled several products from their website after the items sparked outrage for appearing to promote brownface.

Representatives from Disney told The Huffington Post on Wednesday that the decision to pull the items came when it was brought to their attention that they were viewed as offensive.

Among the removed items were a Halloween costume and pajama set for kids, both representing the demigod Maui, the fictional co-star played by Dwayne The Rock Johnson.

The team behind Moana has taken great care to respect the cultures of the Pacific Islands that inspired the film, and we regret that the Maui costume has offended some, a Disney representative told HuffPost on Wednesday. We sincerely apologize and are pulling the costume from our website and stores.

Both the Maui costume and pajamas are essentially brown skin bodysuits, adorned with Polynesian tattoos and a faux-leaf skirt. Also listed on the Disney store site: two sets of wigs with thick, dark hair to top off the Maui and Moana look.

I'm pretty sure when people talk about Disney's racist cultural stereotypes they're talking about years and years ago. Currently Disney goes out of their way to make culturally accurate characters based on actual folk tales and legends. Moana isn't a racist character, and kids dressing up as her isn't cultural appropriation.

This whole thing puts minorities in a weird spot when they demand better representation in film, but then complain the instant they're represented and get the standard movie character treatment. It's not going to end well for them.

Well that's also true.

I don't think it's wrong for kids to want to dress up as their favourite disney characters, but it pays for people to at least be aware of and respectful to the cultures they're adopting. That's all I'm saying.

Recognize this: Moana is a really special character to young girls of Polynesian descent who have never seen a Disney Princess who looks like them, just like how Tiana from The Princess and the Frog likely resonated with young Black women who had waited decades to see themselves represented. White girls have plenty of princesses to choose from there's Belle, Ariel, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty you get the idea. If your Caucasian son or daughter doesn't get to be exactly what they wanted for Halloween, encourage them to take a step back and realize that they're awash in privileges that the real Moanas and Tianas of the world will likely never see, because the world is full of racist assholes.

This writer can go fuck themselves. If my kid wanted to dress up like Moana it's because she loves the movie and wants to be like her. It's flattery without even a hint of malice.

And this is the correct way to think about this particular case. The woman allowed her daughter to dress up like Elsa because she's a "made up character" but then claims that Moana represents all of Polynesia. Moana is an islander who one day finds out she is the chosen one of the ocean, and her grandma becomes a fucking bad-ass stingray and helps guide her to find a demigod who stole precious gem from a volcano. Moana is a made-up character too.

Nobody cares about respecting culture during Halloween. You have stupid costumes from all cultures that are offensive.

You're not going to see a black guy say "hmmm maybe i shouldn't wear that leprechaun costume because the Irish might find that offensive, also red heads"

Literally nobody cares about this except crybabies. Don't live in a multicultural country if this offends you.

now think about this logic for a second

whiteness has power because it sets the beauty standard

how does it do that?

little girls see white people on tv and want to look and dress like them

are you following me here?

that gives whiteness power and makes it the beauty standard

NOW white girls want to dress and look like non-white people

but instead of allowing this to flourish into power and a new beauty standard

they get chewed out

illogical right?
