Years ago, when I was backpacking across Western Europe, I was just outside Barcelona, hiking in the foothills of mount Tibidabo. I was at the end of this path, and I came to a clearing, and there was a lake, very secluded, and there were tall trees all around. It was dead silent. Gorgeous. And across the lake I saw, a beautiful woman, bathing herself. but she was crying...

This sounds like it's from a Hemingway novel or something

Well yeah, she realized some creeper was watching her bathe.

How much did it cost you? Seems like an awesome experience but I imagine it'd be pretty expensive.

It is the backpacking story from Friends

What's wrong with Italy? I'm currently learning Italian ;(

That sounds really cool though, I'm going to Europe for the first time this summer (England) and I can't wait :p

But man, that's hardcore, you even sold your house. I do fee you 100% tho. It's like, what's the point of it all haha. Seriously, once you start a career is kinda scary realizing that's gonna be your life till you die, for the most part.

-nearly every road is a toll road - i spent easily 300 euro on tolls.
-speed limits are really low
-speed cameras everywhere
-roads outside of toll roads are in really bad condition
-anywhere to buy food is open in weird hours. only during lunch and dinner time.
-rest stop food only consists of bread, meat, and junk food.
-the southern part of italy south of rome is extremely trashy. I mean that in the most literal sense. there are bags of trash everywhere due to the cities not wanting to pay the mafia.
-everywhere that isn't a tourist destination is extremely run down.
-fancy hotel made my wife wear a top at the pool
-cinque terre local authorities will issue expensive parking tickets to tourists even if they are in designated parking areas.
-my wife was groped several times by Italian men.
-corrupt police officer pulled me over for no reason and forced me to pay him a bribe or else he would arrest me
-several places refused to serve us for being tourists.
-tourists cities were horribly overcrowded

Overall it was a bad experience. I did have a few fun times, like Rome was cool, I got to hang out with nuns on a beach, and venice was awesome, but overall italy sucked.

I felt really stuck in my job. It didn't pay a lot, and it was a really toxic environment. It felt great to just say **** it and leave.

After my trip and months of prep, I managed to get an amazing job at a huge tech company.

Kudos to yer! A friend of mine and her boyfriend did a year-long trip around Southeast Asian and then several months of road trips through the United States. Afterwards they bought a home in Hawaii and she's working as an engineer for one of the cities. Another friend and her husband did something similar and somehow she landed her old job again as a city engineer (I am starting to wonder if this is some trend....)

I am actually amazed by what some folks can accomplish. Some folks struggle to land a decent job while some can disappear for a year, come back, and get a good paying job again.

True, but it wasn't easy by any means. I spent a good 10 hours a day coding and studying algorithms, and making some of my own. It took almost 8 months to land an interview, then the interviewing process was brutal.
