She'd say "do you swear on God's honor?"

and of course as a little kid I'd fess up and tell the truth. Is this a solid parenting technique or kinda bad iyo?

Im gonna replace god with Santa and instead of banishment to hell it means you dont get presents. Unfortunately this will only work seasonally for a few years.

I heard that and using his name in vain were permanent hell sentences and I've seen people in some sort of authority use it to scare people. So God sent down his son (or himself) to Earth who preached forgiveness while God himself doesn't forgive?

it doesn't have to be God, but I think it's a pretty damn important thing to instill in your kids. Be honest and be a man or woman of your word. It gets lost in our society nowadays but it's such a good thing to have.

Old testament God was never one for forgiveness. He held grudges and heaven won't help you if you got on his bad side.

how come using this tactic and asking someone to potentially lie on gods name, or using gods name as a selfish means to get the answer you want, isn't seen as disrespectful?

well if we read the bible....

Matthew 5
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:
34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:
35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.
36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.
37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Matthew 23
16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.

tl;dr, making your kid swear to God isn't something Jesus wants you to ever do

but that would be too easy

then we couldn't act like these anecdotes are doing God's will and thus we can't act like God is bad because of it

No, you're teaching the kid to do something good solely because of fear of a negative repercussion, not because he should do what's right. If the child ever stops believing in the negative repercussion, then he's more likely to do an immoral thing.

While negative repercussions are a useful tool in parenting, it shouldn't be the centerpiece of the relationship with your child.

So you think the Santa thing is a bad idea?

many kids are actually shattered when they discover Santa is not only not real but many adults they loved and respect had lied to them about it

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/pretending-santa-real-damages-relationships-9323976

Telling kids that Santa is real can ruin relationships between parents and children, and even cause long term damage, experts have warned.

Creating stories about Father Christmas undermines a child's trust and isn't completely morally justifiable, they claim.

Psychologist Professsor Christopher Boyle and social scientist Dr Kathy McKay have also blasted the idea of a "terrifying" North Pole intelligence agency which judges whether kids are nice or naughty.

"All children will eventually find out they've been consistently lied to for years, and this might make them wonder what other lies they've been told.

as far as the other part

don't lie about the dad being dead

don't say "he left" or some other cop out, tell them he is dead

but you don't have to explain he put a gun in his mouth and blew his brains all over the walls methinks

what do you mean by lie of omission?

just because your 5 year old asks you how his dad died and to spare him no detail doesn't obligate you to do so does it?

consider:

5 year old "mom, what are those pills you just took!?!"

does she have to answer the question? no

but she could on the other hand say "son, it wasn't pills, it was candy"

see the difference?
