Look at the Avengers timeline:

April 2007 - Tony is kidnapped
-9 months pass- (mentioned in the Phase 1 timeline)
January 2008 - Tony escapes, rest of IM1
-6 months pass- (also mentioned in the Phase 1 timeline)
May/June 2008 - IM2/Thor/Hulk/Cap wakes up; Avengers
-6 months pass- (mentioned in the movie + Christmas)
December 2008 - IM3

He quite literally sold arms to the military, got imprisoned, created a mech suit, escaped, created another couple suits, created a new element, fixed his poisoning, joined up with other superheroes, went into space, made like 50 other suits, and fixed the hole in his chest all in just over a year.
Fucking ridiculous.
