Yeah, not all idols are the same of course, each one has their own personal story. Sometimes, in fact a lot of them don't really have that primary motivation even, oh I want to be a singer, or even a dancer or rapper or whatever, they might do acting, or modeling, just want to be on screen or stage or what have you. It's nothing wrong.

On the other hand, Laboum have one or two wins on music shows but they're here. Or DIA, actually most of these groups, they're also pretty much rookies still but they're already "failures"? I mean how successful do you have to be in order to be ruled out then lol. And like Taemin is one of the judges, and yes I know but he's still Shinee's freaking maknae. I see the whole premise of the show as just kinda tagged on as usual, I'm simply excited because we might be getting one (well, two!) amazing supergroup out of this thing.

ha, tbh i'm not even that big of BTOB fan, but this comeback is super good. also, i just realized i posted about a cube artist in every single post so far, and i hate myself for it.

For the Unit, the premise is what drew me to it initially so I can see why they would lean into it for the previews even if the actual participants have drifted away from that. It's funny, because Dal Shabet's Subin was one of the first participants announced which changed my expectations for who qualifies very early on. She pulled out due to conflicting schedules which, yeah, if you're in a position to have conflicting schedules then you probably don't belong here. I suspect it was harder to fill the roster with only true flops, because most of them have probably moved on years ago. It makes sense that it had to be less successful rookies or groups that have been popular enough to stay active without a breakthrough. Plus if you don't have some big names on your show about flops, it will flop.

Jungha was the highlight of the episode (when he begged Rain to do it one more time hahaha) but of course he's already got haters for being himself. These are the kind of people who will also dislike Hyunjoo so yeah, I don't like them. See what I mean about the premise of the show though? Show premises are... more what you'd call a guideline than the actual premise. Also I still have to watch subs if for no other reason than I really want to hear all of Areum's story.

Mmm, I love OEC, like so much more than 1/3, for one. There are so precious few groups that even attempt something even close to this style. Usually only solo artists, and only the bolder ones at that will really go into it. Even just a sub-unit devoted to this sound is heaven sent for me.

further on the unit - dramatically, it makes sense to have a variety of contestants. certainly there are interesting reasons why some groups fail, but mostly it's just luck and timing, and you can only tell so many of those stories. it's good to toss in a hype trainee, or a charming actor in there.

i kind of like how transparent they are on the unit about how talent isn't that important. it was maddening whenever trainees on broduce were asked about their low/falling rank, and they had to give an answer about working harder.

i should post jun (u-kiss)'s performance since i've gone back to it a few times. i haven't paid much attention to the group since he joined, but he's got stage presence.

YG is creepy, but Mixnine was fun. It's got that Produce 101 editing. Highlights were the countryside agency (FM), and the awkward YG and Brave Brothers meeting. From those shown in ep.1 I like:

People are hating on Eyedi already for her arrogance, but it's entertaining and she's the goddamn best. Don't make too much of his choices, he went around picking trainees for very selfish reasons. Remember when he got to Fave (for one) he said he'd rather leave any trainee that already had exposure. It's not really as much about their talent or whatever. He wants whatever will make him and the program look good, in fact the less experienced a trainee is and the more he can mold them into what he wants, the better. He obviously projects arrogance, he said as much of Brave Brothers. But yeah, isn't it fun watching him go around being an ass to everybody lol. And yeah I think the PD101 vibe will only get stronger as the show degen-errr, progresses. Which hey should be fun, too.

Yeah I'm worried that he only wants to use the high profile trainees. Again I'm really upset at what he did to Shinsadong Tiger, he just basically went you guys are great but yeah, I'm just not gonna take you all, only the ones without exposure. Again, everywhere he went. But anyways, like you said, he still can't just brush off some names so he takes them along, too, like Soomin, yeah like you said Fave doesn't really need him, except of course it's still exposure so hey. I just hope Soomin and all the others understand that because it can become something of a bad habit to keep going on these shows and never debut...

Oh that wasn't even about his picks specifically, just a general truth about the guy who groomed his wife and tanked her group on purpose so he could date her. He's pretty good at being the heel though, so you root for the trainees more. Ugh, the part where he patted the head of a trainee he didn't pick as he was leaving and said, "you were the one I noticed first" like wtf.

Right? These shows can be fun, but they should lead to a debut after getting the exposure. I can just about accept that survival shows are the trend and obligatory right now, but not that someone should go on three of them in 2 years. I see Soomin with the most views on her audition clip and top voted during the showcase, and clearly the hype is still there. A third survival show feels like a bit of an unnecessary risk if from nothing else than just overexposure.

The Unit is finally done with auditions, and onto the first mission. some notes:

- areum has the best reactions.
- hyunjoo is adorable. the way kijoong speaks is adorable. seyong and feeldog's relationship is adorable.
- there's something to the simplicity of just self-selecting teams. no organization or rules, just everyone in a big room and have at it. it reminded me a bit of the seat selection in the first produce 101 which is still the best drama in one of these types of shows. broduce tried to throw in a twist to their seat selection, which made too much of a thing that really didn't matter at all, and also lost the spontaneity of the original.
- speaking of seat selection the contrast was funny:

boys: choosing where to sit is mind games.
girls: i think we sit by rank? whatever.

and for teams:

boys: let's look at the big picture, we need to spread out our members to maximize our chances (followed by drawn-out strategizing)
girls: 3 members of melody day? 2 members of DIA? we're half way done! (4 more people glom on in the next minute)

I haven't watched ep. 3 yet, sounds like it was fun!

I'm actually starting to feel a little sour that they've put young trainees in with veteran idols. I really don't like it when they do that in any show, I don't think it's fair to the older contestants. I know, it is what it is, oh well, it's just a minor gripe.

As you know, Dal Shabet and MelodyDay all the way for me, if they don't put in at least one of each I'mma have to cap someone, lolz. They didn't show much Brave Girls, I'm not even sure if they all passed, but yeah them, too. There's so many good contestants though. I like The Ark, specially Suji, that Good Day girl whose talent is smiling, and now that I watched Euijin I can see how she made center, she's not all that great but wow stage presence. So many though, again Unit G is gonna be amazing I'm sure.

From the boys I don't recall that many but some performances did make an impression on me, besides Jungha, Taemin's friend (Timothy?), ACE, couple others.

Speaking of ACE I did watch Mixnine ep. 2. Man the Sori drama was something else, you can see the PD101 touch there, it has to be watched, although in the end at least YG took her in. I'm not as familiar with so many trainees but I guess the Fave girls and RGP are my favorites. Also for ACE I think the two front strategy is really smart lol, between the two shows they're bound to become popular now. Seeing their story training in that little agency was very moving.

Although obviously similar there are some clear differences between the two shows, which is good. In spirit they are very different, Unit is all positive, M9 is all negative hahaha.

EDIT: Oh yeah, can't wait to see Jessica next ep.
