I have an old student model saxophone from 1998 that I played in high school that I can get repaired and play... Or I could get a new professional model saxophone that has a high F# key, better sound overall, and looks cooler...

Decisions, decisions...

Gonna take my old saxophone to the shop to see how much it's gonna cost to get repaired and restored and all that, then make a decision.

Can you rent it for a couple of months to make sure you want to pick up playing it again?

I guarantee getting a sax repaired is cheaper than buying new.

A student horn should only cost $500 or so to restore (disclaimer: Birmingham AL rates) compared to like $2k+ for a new pro horn. Maybe up to $750 if the metal is all dented and you need everything repadded and get new cork.

Although I've played that model horn you're looking at, and it kicks the shit out of any student horn. So, if you're a gigging musician (or just looking to burn some cash) I say buy.

Also, don't buy if the F# key is like, an actual deciding factor (lol). That note is pretty easy to hit consistently with altissimo fingerings. It's the G above THAT that takes a lot of practice to get right.

That's the thing, though. If it's gonna cost $500 - $750 to repair/restore the old one, I'm just gonna go ahead and buy the new one.

I wouldn't say it's a deciding factor. Just something that's nice to have in addition to the better sound in a pro model vs a student model.

have you weighed your price/quality options?

i played a kessler intermediate sax in high school and it played well

i hear very very good things about their top model (kessler custom handmade) and its like $1800

Yeah, I'm definitely gonna have to build my chops back up. Back in high school, I could play for hours on 5 strength reeds. I could only stand to play for about 20 minutes on a 3 1/2 reed when I went to a music shop on Friday and played a demo sax.

I have weighed pricing and stuff and I'm pretty much set on this one if the repair/restore estimate comes back too high.

Oh that... I don't know it, but I could learn it if I put the necessary time into it.
