I don't think X's story was bad at all. Most of the meat was in what you chose to do and all the stories of colonizing an alien world and living alongside aliens with their own unique cultures. Even the main plotline wasn't particularly bad either, just basic.

Ugh... fuck that Nopon that lives in the swamp cave. He has like six quests that you can only do one at a time and you have to climb up the hill to return to him every time to complete them.

I'll get it eventually, but I said the same about X and that still hasn't happened, so who knows. I just wish the characters didn't look so out of place against the world's visuals.

Original Xenoblade didn't have a really exceptional story or anything. Probably a little worse than the better Tales games.

Original Xenoblade had charming characters and from early on they made you care about them and their quest. XCX didn't have that. And playing Engage the Enemy during cut scenes certainly didn't hurt.

Xenoblade X had a great story, and honestly probably one of the most bold attempts at telling a story through a world since Majora's Mask. You get to watch the relationships between humans and aliens build slowly as you develop NLA, and it has a really great "show not tell vibe"

It also had the worlds worst mainline story hastily glued over the top of it about how everyone is dying robots that want to eat a potato man in 20 different ways. Its major flaw, is that there are tons of different weird aliens that learn to fight and defend their home in weird ways but you control a bunch humans with the same size boobs and a tall blue guy. It's almost a perfect allegory to the colonization of the americas, there are amazing deep clashes of culture and human interaction, but we only focus on the white guys and a token alien character (that acts white enough to fit in).
