Not a bad idea. Sometimes the threat of you being watched is enough to deter people. There was a scene about this in "Clerks."

It is a deterrent for most would-be robbers. People who have a mission to rob someone though won't care about security systems, real or not.

Yeah, it's really not that bad or uncommon of an idea. There's a reason why a lot of retail stores will put up fake cameras alongside real ones to deter shop lifting.

I live in a upper middle class neighborhood, and my house has eight outdoor cameras, active alarm system (flood, water/gas leak, motion, door/window sensors, glass break sensors, and semi-active fire suppression system (aimed just at the kitchen stove)), and a couple signs and stickers outdoor stating as such.

I also have a loaded sidearm in my bedside drawer (in a gun-safe), and a 19" wall-mounted screen, that shows a hidden camera footage of the corridor leading to my bedroom, so I have the upper hand in case some assholes STILL decide to break in after the alarms go off.

*EDIT*: The alarm system is ADT (I think I spent like $500 to set up everything, and I am paying $25/mo for active monitoring), the fire suppression system over my kitchen stove came with the house, and the cameras I set up using Amcrest DVR and IP cameras.

Buying the sign is usually an effective deterrent.

Buy a dog and get a beware of dog sign

That's pretty common. My old landlord used to have like 7 cameras around the building and only 2 of them actually worked, the rest were decoys

My folks bought two fake cameras for the house sometime after we moved in, lol. Then they went and got real cameras and those actually helped us ID a burglar.

It can work but even if you have an actual security system some people who are dead set on burglary or robbery will still break in anyway.

But things like open windows, TV(or other expensive electronics) boxes at the curb, or even if there are lights on or not can all have an effect.

Which is why it's always smart to leave a light on at all points in a room that's near the entrance to your place, especially during the daytime hours when people tend to be at work or school. Sure you may have a robber who is casing a place for weeks beforehand, but more often than not they'll simply go on to another residence

Easiest pic to take is the wall mounted monitor right by my bed; I hope you understand why I do not want to take pics of my cameras/setup...

You can also see the alarm keypad right by the door.

So the idea here is that if something happens, I can just grab my gun, turn the TV on, and just wait behind the bed until they're right by the door... and just let loose.
