Should we?

Saw a sign at my college that said native american appreciation day and cultural appreciation not appropriation. I thought nothing much of it but then I remembered that is was Columbus day and I told my mom happy columbus day and she said she does not celebrate it.

If there was a way to celebrate it, I likely would just to spite the SJWs who want it changed.

didn't know we celebrated it. but if my knowledge of history is correct he actually never stepped foot in the actual US so why should we give a fuck about him. he also didn't discover it. can never remember the name of the guy who technically did as far as europeans go but our country was somewhat named after him despite not being pronounced the same way. just going of sound it was some shit like Amerigos or some shit. (though I think vikings even predated him. but they didn't stick around to claim the land, probably came to plunder and found wasn't much to plunder and left)

No. He was a jerk, and wasn't even the first to discover America.

1. Native Americans. duh.
2. Vikings

Also possibly the ancient Egyptians (before the Vikings) and (unlikely) the Chinese. Then Columbus.

Not really. It's a dumb holiday that celebrates a sociopath scion of colonialism. Even if we ignore that, it's mostly a mythologized version of a historical footnote mostly embraced because of racism towards Italians.

It's just ... dumb ... on so many levels.

The day basically doesn't have meaning unless you go to a public school or work a government job, or maybe some banks, in which case you likely have the day off.

For everyone else you go to work and the day is as normal.

Even the people who have the day off, it's not like they put on Colombus costumes and celebrate him (not like people do it for presidents day either, or other historical figures that have a dated holiday but nobody actually actively celebrates).

So technically, almost nobody celebrates Colombus Day even if you do get the day off. It's mostly just a government holiday.

That said, should the day be removed or the named changed because people find history to be offensive? No.

I don't give a crap about Colombus or Colombus Day, but that's a stupid amount of effort to put into something because people's feeling are hurt about history, about something nobody actually does in the first place, celebrate Colombus.

You want to name it anything name it government holiday #8 or something, because that's what it is.

Read the topic and thought it was an idea for a new holiday.
Turns out it's already an official holiday in a lot of states except nobody celebrates it, but post offices and banks may be closed that day. It's also not on october 12 but on a monday because of reasons.

I can name a handful of more important explorers. And I can name over 100 things that make a better holiday. This seems to be a nationalistic thing, italians vs spaniards, white immigrants vs native americans etc.
I don't see any fun or pro's about this "holiday". It's better off changed to something more meaningful. I also don't have a problem with people that want to celebrate it.

Real talk, outside of some places getting the day off, I can't imagine anyone in the world going out of their way to "celebrate" Columbus Day.

I've never known anyone to care about Columbus Day. It's like Presidents Day or something else frivolous.

Last night, South Park brought the SJW objections to my attention, however. Why is it that in the 2010s, everybody has to get up in arms and protest about every-fucking-thing ever? They LOVE protesting, and I just don't get it.

Replace the holiday with any notable Indigenous American, preferably a woman, like Sacajawea.

Also, we need to quit rewarding hetero white men with holidays, and give more respect to minorities. LGBTQIA+ month (June) should have at least 1 national holiday set aside to celebrate a respected figure, like Joseph Lobdell or Christine Jorgensen (put more emphasis on trans people over gay or bi). February (Black History Month) also needs more African American figures, such as Harriet Tubman and Rosa Parks, to be given a national holiday. For other minorities, let's give Luisa Capetillo (Puerto Rican) a national holiday, as well.
