but the system declines it.

this isnt a bank, this is a wal-mart.

See, it'd be nice if we got some sort of indication why it was being declined, but it isnt because your check is bad, just our system and its check cashing processes declined it. There generally shouldnt be a reason a bank couldnt do it. A lot of people get frustrated and mad, but I can't help them unfortunately.

Some people literally cash every paycheck they get at wal-mart, which I think is the most idiotic way to handle your finances, but people do it.

Had a guy who wanted to cash a 1,200 dollar check(yes, we can cash that high) tonight. system declined it so he was frustrated. I told him it was likely because of its value and him not cashing any checks there before, so our system didnt recognize him. he didnt understand what that would have to do with anything and left, and seemed kinda angry. I was done right then, too, and on my way out I saw him walk back in. Kinda wanted to wait around to see a grown man likely throw a tirade but i figured it wasnt worth it and for my own sanity i should just leave.

If only there was a way to directly deposit to your account, but they probably owe child support so I can see why they don't.

So this reminds me of another story. A guy wanted to cash a check. was angry. i think he was at two registers first before a manager sent him to mine. I asked for his ID and he shouted "REALLY? AGAIN?" and the manage kinda nodded to forego it since its been seen already. Now the problem was, the check reader could not read the routing number on his check. some checks arent cut quite to standard and if its off a certain bit it wont read the routing number. again, a problem a bank should not have. So the guy is like really pissed, and i keep trying to run his check through even though i didnt want him to succeed, I was still going to try everything i could to make it work. still wouldnt go through. I told the guy hey i can do this all day if you'd li- YES, WE WILL.

Okay, sure. So another manager comes over and just says hey look buddy it wont work we can't get it to work, sorry. so then he storms off.

Now thats not all. I know this guy because a female friend of mine was in the store with this guy once, she knows him because her boyfriend knew him. So i'm thinking wow flip out on a guy you were introduced to before. So I am talking to my friend and I say "hey yeah that josh guy was just in here throwing an absolute tantrum over a check we couldn't cash" so she says "thats odd, Ive only known him to be a nice guy. i will talk to him about this

and im thinking what the hell, i didnt expect it to come back to him but i figured hey what the hell. so a few hours later I ask if she spoke to him and she said 'Yes, he didn't want to talk about it he is still pretty upset and he also thinks youre an asshole"

that actually made my day.

I know some people can't get bank accounts due to super poor credit, but I wonder why people that could get one bother cashing their checks all the time like that. I almost never use cash anymore

That being said, I could see how it would be confusing that the check cashing could be declined for reasons other than the check not being valid. Wonder if there's a way to make that clearer up front before they get declined (although having worked as a cashier, I know a lot of time it doesn't matter how much you explain something, some people just refuse to get it).

Well, you're dealing with Wal-Mart people.

Some people with awful credit histories have to, as banks will sometimes pull that info up before letting people open a checking account. In other cases, they fucked up at a bank themselves which no longer wants them as a customer or they can't carry a minimum balance so they get charged fees. Which brings us back to Wal-Mart people. Not Wal-Mart customers, but a specific subset of Wal-Mart customers that make people embarrassed to step foot into a Wal-Mart.

i haven't. none here do. walmart charges, like, $2 to cash a check. the only other place here that'll do it is a gas station, but they wont cash anything over $500 and charge $5 per $100.

and then you meet the people who refuse to cash a check at walmart, simply because it's walmart.

Those people go and cash every check they get because they likely spend it on pot.

I know this because I had several people show up a few times a week at my last job absolutely reeling of weed and getting every last penny they could from their account and check, even if it all only totaled up to $50.

that takes awhile if you just started a job and just did the paperwork to do that. and in the meantime you get checks at least with some jobs i've had.

last job I had didn't do direct deposit at all. not even for my boss. his boss came by every friday and hand delivered a check to him.

so its not always someone who its the only way they know how, or they are avoiding child support, buying drugs etc. sometimes its the only option they have especially if they work during bank hours. I worked 6 days a week 10-12 hour days, no way in hell could I find time to go to the bank.

ATMs exist.

ATMs don't cash checks last I checked. and as said direct deposit can take a few weeks to set up. which btw I had to take time off of work just so I could go to the bank and do the paperwork.

after doing the paperwork I wanna say it was roughly 3 weeks to a month before it kicked in.

ATMs allow you to deposit a check... I mean if you need your entire check immediately in cash, it won't work (usually), but no matter what size check I put in that way, some of, if not all of it is immediately available for withdrawal.

where in the hell do these ATMs exist? cause they sure as hell don't around here. most be a regional or atleast city thing.

Well, I've seen it in Minnesota, New Mexico, and California. It's your bank's decision on how to handle a check deposited via ATM.

I use a credit union bank for employees of the state I live in. they don't have them on them. though not a state employee currently I refuse to give up that account. they don't nickle or dime me over a damn thing unlike my last bank and I love it.

My Minnesota bank was a state employee credit union too. They did it there, this was back in 1997-2003 when I moved away. Albeit it wasn't the entire check over a certain amount. (And I didn't exactly have a stellar history with them, this was the account I got shut down over I mentioned earlier in the topic.)

However, it all comes down to what works for you. LOL.

ehh knowing this state, they likely too cheap to update the ATMs. that or didn't bother because most people use debit cards these days.

personally I always prefer cash. I prefer to get direct deposit, but then I like to go take the majority out to have in cash. I spend less if I can physically see my stack of money getting smaller with each purchase.

Ask your bank if they have a night drop. They should have one. You fill out a deposit slip, put it and your check or money in an envelope and they deposit it when they open the next day they're open. I use that at my bank since I work nights and can't make it to the bank before they're closed.

never seen that at my bank. i'm not 100% positive they don't but if they do they sure as hell don't make it obvious in any way. never seen a drop box or anything of the nature. if in that situation again though, i'll ask.

I do want to say I'm not defending people who get pissy though. the few times my check got declined, I just kinda did a hang my head in defeat maybe let out a sigh and walk off sorta thing lol

ATMs here will do that, although I doubt I could withdraw the funds right away. these days though, you don't even need an ATM, you can now deposit a cheque just by taking a picture of it with your smart phone.

You know, I don't even know what bank you use, but I feel confident that they 100% have a night drop. I want to point out, it's not a drop box. In the sense that it's not a "box". It's literally a safe that has a hatch for you to drop things into. Usually it's in the drive through window lane just past the drive through window. It's also usually flat against the building so it doesn't stand out.

yeah still doesn't help if I need my money ASAP though which in the cases I was trying to cash my check I was also wanting to buy things. when I only had 1 day off a week. that one day off (sunday) could be hectic as I also had to do all my shopping. as said in my case it was only temporary as I was just waiting on my paper work for direct deposit to clear.

Every bank I have ever heard of has night drops, because businesses usually close long after the bank does and they're mostly business customers using it.

The one at the specific bank I use isn't in a drive through, but it's on the wall near the drive throughs. It looks like one of those UPS/FedEx drop boxes with a big handle.

I know what a drop box looks like, haven't seen one but I admit I haven't looked for one either.

yeah the bank I bank with is out of my way compared to walmart also. and I don't choose a bank simply because of convenient location. as i've said in another post my current bank doesn't nickle or dime me over any thing so they got my business as long as I can possibly keep my account open. (not exactly the easiest bank to get an account with. have to be a state employee when you open the account or have a family member who is to sponsor you)
