I bought my first lotto ticket in years. I've been hearing how the odds are so low it's pointless.

5 million people buy a ticket thinking it's hopeless.

Then bam, one of those people becomes very, very rich.

I live in a country with 36 million. That's pretty small. One of us will win over a hundred million Canadian dollars (so about 50,000 USD).

What's the most you've ever won in a lottery or scratch card? Are odds really that bad? Is it harder to win in the States than Canada due to population?

I've bought maybe 300 scratch cards in my life. Never won over 10 bucks.

One time my friend got 25 bucks and we were celebrating like we won 100 mil.

The odds of winning the lottery are 1 in 175 million.

So, think of a number between 1 and 175 million and then write it down...

Next, see how many times you have to generate a new number within that range until it hits the number you wrote down....
https://www.random.org/

Let's say every 5 numbers you generate = 1 week (as if you're buying 5 lottery tickets a week)...

Finally, tell us all how many weeks it took before you arrived at the number you wrote down (# of generated numbers/5)...

....that should give you a good feel for how likely you are to win.

That's why I no longer play the lotto. I realized I am never going to win and am wasting my hard earned money

I like the example of, "The odds of you winning with a single play are exactly the same as all the numbers being the same twice in a row."

I don't gamble because it A. Gives me false hope and i end up disappointment everytime i lose, which is everytime. B. In my country the chances are 0,0000065% to win in lottery.

If you play only lottery for 30 years, with 2-5 $/ every week, you would have more saved up after 30 years if you saved that money each week, than playing.

My parents have played lottery for like 40 years, their biggest win has been about few hundred . While they have lost thousands.
