Regardless of your feelings on it, I think "Aerith dies" has to be on there. I think everything else is up for debate.

If you just mean my four favorite moments (which are objectively the best four FF moments anyway):

FFIX: The end when Garnet rushed out to hug Zidane
FFIV: When the orphans still loved esper Terra
FFX: The laughing scene
FFIV: When Relm shamed Ultros into not being a jerk

EDIT: Though, they should probably all be from different games so replace that last one with Lightning being badass and killing everyone on the train at the start of FFXIII

If it's not our personal favorite it has to have FFI and FFVII on there. I would round it out with IV and X. They each represent the start of a new generation or era of FF and are spaced enough apart to feel comprehensive. Anything else is just not important enough or too polarizing.

MY Personal favorite story moments

the aforementioned one in FFV

FFIV: Everybody was rotated out so quickly that the impact of them sacrificing themselves started wearing off. But Cid's was way too awesome to not count. Especially considering he survived being blown up and falling from thousands of feet in the air and into lava

FFVI: I think the coin tossing scene. Its been awhile though. It also helps that Sabin is my favorite character

FFVII: Either SIT DOWN AND DRINK YOUR GOD DAMN TEA
Or everybody in the party saying THERE AIN"T NO GETTIN OFFA THIS TRAIN WE ON at the same time with the Highwind theme kicking in.

FFVIII: The portion of the ending that had Eyes on me playing

FFIX: Probably the scene where you're on the ship, and Vivi solos one of the Waltzes. That whole scenario is what I first think of when I think FFIX's story

FFX: I've been replaying it for the first time in 15 years and I'm not at the end yet, but the stand out moments for me so far are
1. Sin showing up to Zanarkand while Tidus is playing his game. And Auron raising his jug of Sake to his friend upon arrival.
2.Wakka coming out for his last game on the second half of the finals. Bonus points if you're winning and you score one more goal with him. The overriding triumphant theme that takes over the normal blitzball theme really nails it in
And 3. Everybody collectively teasing Yuna about oversleeping, including Auron. It shows how close they all really are. It makes the future spoiler all the more tragic too

Dunno if FFI should be there for starting a generation, when FFIV and FFVI had certain scenes you could consider to be the pinnacle of those eras.

Also starting to think you could make a top 4 of just FFVII related moments for personal favs.

Other than leaving Midgar there's also:

Palmer getting hit by a truck
Tifa vs Scarlet slap fight
Aeris closeup into walking the streets of Midgar
Cloud jumping off the train
Red XIII seeing his petrified dad
Zack Fair - Crisis Core ending
Spiked Midgar Zolom
Sailor Barret
Waking up in Shinra HQ to Sephiroth's carnage

I like a few FF games more than VII, but VII's stuff for some reason just sticks out more to me.

Trying to think of FFXII's dramatic scenes, but none seem to really qualify off the top of my head.

There's funny scenes here and there, but nothing that was on the level of something like say, Kefka poisoning Doma, or Garnet's haircut.

The top of Pharos Lighthouse is FFXII's best moment, although I'm not sure it qualifies as its most iconic.

I like how a lot of our most iconic moments we're listing happen early in the game. I think FFIX is the only one that hasn't had something from its intro posited yet.

Yeah, but it also doesn't involve someone that was an integral part of the story, the way Galuf/Aeris were.
