The reason why many games journalists aren't great at games is because they play so damn many all the time that they don't have the ability to put hours into the vast majority of games to get great. That being said, there's a difference between not being good and not being competent. Having a low kill/death ratio is one thing, being like that scrub journalist that had issues with the tutorial in Cuphead (and apparently taking a long time to grasp that he couldn't jump on enemies like in Mario) and didn't know about leveling up in Mass Effect is just sheer incompetence. An analog would be an automobile journalist.
