I know there are some other people that have said they wanted to participate (and frankly I'd rather see Giggs in here than myself) but I'm interested in joining sometime in the future. You know, in the unfortunate event that something terrible happens to someone in the current group... Or if they like quit, or whatever.

i was ready to trash this because i hate the AFI i've heard (which isn't much, admittedly). but what i've heard didn't sound anything like this - didn't expect this post-punk-ish music! still thought this song was kinda dull but it wasn't terrible. and in any case, i applaud them for being diverse. one of my problems with punk bands is that many of them do the exact same shit over and over and over again (not ALL punk bands obviously - i'm aware of bands like the clash), so to see one that's clearly not afraid to try out multiple genres is nice.

pretty sure i didn't actually hate decemberunderground but i didn't like it much either. don't think i listened to it more than once.

Decemberundergound is an album that is sort of mixed among the fanbase, some REALLY love it and other really don't like it. I'm among the opinion it's on the lower end of their discography, has some really great songs on it but as an album overall it's not super strong.

Oh yes this was so awesome! I got a nice Queens of the Stone age vibe at the beginning and that awesome riff is one of the best I've heard in a while. Really love the increasing tension of the bass and even the vocals towards the end, which teeter on frantic. The vocals and lyrics are trippy, and remind of a desert fantasy scene and also a little reminiscent of horror punk.

finally, my favorite genre! fantastic tune. i was familiar with the name kamasi washington (i do try my best to keep track of who the major jazz players at the moment are) but i had not checked out his stuff before. adore this kind of neo jazz and the drummer was insanely good. still taking hail of dry yeast over this but it's an extremely close call.

The key word there is "studio", I believe.

So it's the halfway point so I'll talk so it's not just Lasa critiquing haha

I really dig Bane's song this week, it's got a more grungish/sludgy feel but the girl's voice gives it a nice distinction too. Good pick!

Snake's was decent, wish there was more to it though I have to agree with Lasa that this didn't sound like what I was expecting.

Mycro's is probably my favorite from him, fwiw! Solid track and given his interests I can see why I pick it

jcgamer makes his debut, and it's a solid, almost Dido-esque song, albeit not one I love. Solid debut though

flubbin's is pretty cute, I absolutely love how it's a lovely tune and just how deadpan she says "motherfucker"

Drugs on a Bus > New York > Hall of Dry Yeast > Don't Tell Me > Aurelia atm, though I probably listen to them all again on Saturday so the list is subject to change

i like the talking heads but i don't love them (though i have to give them credit for making the song radiohead named themselves after, obviously). i'm not a world music fan so that aspect of the band i don't particularly care for. (yeah, i realize that that's a stupid thing to say - it's like saying "i don't like indie music" as if that's actually a clearly defined genre - but it's just that most bands and artists that claim to play world music make music i don't like much.) it's funny that the songs by AFI and st. vincent were quite different from what i expected, because this song is EXACTLY what i expected a talking heads song to sound like. don't have much else to say, it's a decent song. seems like it would be nice to groove out to this on the beach. i've heard the talking heads do better but i've also heard them do worse. digi seems to be pretty consistent in picking songs i like but don't quite love.

when this started i thought i was going to love this since i adore slow jams but... yeah, not gonna lie, i wasn't too into this. it's just not very well composed and i thought the electric guitar sounded stupid and out of place (and electric guitar is one of my favorite instruments, as i've mentioned before). however, the singing was good and i liked the guitar solo at the end. but i didn't like how the solo faded out after about a minute of playing. i could see the song ending with an ass kicking solo of like 6 minutes long and then i would have quite liked it, but as it is it's... above average, i'll say.

I love the Talking Heads immensely and this is one of my favorite tracks from them. The message of the song is extremely interesting, and I like that it subverts your expectations for an upbeat track about nature taking back the industrialized world. The "you've got it" hook is so catchy too and the worldbeat instrumentals make it really warm and welcomes you into the track with open arms and helps you listen to the ideas of the song more. So well done.

current rankings: (subject to change before Sunday :P) (are we allowed to post ratings already?)

Talking Heads - (Nothing But) Flowers - 8/10
What a happy, upbeat song about a post-apocalyptic landscape! :D as usual, even lesser-known Talking Heads songs are really good (although DEVO is my new-wave pioneering band of choice). I like the latin feel it has - reminds me of one my faves of theirs, "I Zimbra".

St. Vincent - New York - 7.5/10
Initially I was weary, because, having played drums at a church for years, it has kind of a worship song-feel to it. In the end, though, the lyrics (+ the way they're subdivided - very satisfying) & chorus vocal melody are pretty strong.

Kamasi Washington - Truth - 7/10
so, ordinarily I'd say this is way too fucking long, and, it is too fucking long, BUT, for what it is, it's quite good. like most freeform jazz, it has a relaxing quality. the vibraphone early on, as any vibes would in a jazz piece, pleasantly remind me of The Sims "Neighborhood" tracks :). The sax and choir compliment each other very nicely throughout.

Crystal Fairy- Drugs on a Bus - 6/10
I dig the opening riff, when the main beat drops at 1:05, and when the drums + guitar get a bit nuttier in the outro. That stuff rocks well and good. Not really a fan of the vocals/vocal melody though.

Con Funk Shun - Let Me Put Love On Your Mind - 6/10
eh - not super into this soul/slow jam stuff. it's fine like in the background of a party or something, but it doesn't really hold my attention and it's not especially memorable. vocals are nice, though.

agargara - hall of dry yeast - 6/10
oh Mycro and his mixed-meters ;) I like that this very much has a VGM feel, sounding more like a menu theme early and then like mid-level BGM later on. I initially count something like 6+8/6+6+2, then 4+4+4+2 after the tone-shift at 1:19, and back to 6+8/6+6+2 at the end. either way it always adds up to 14 [appropriate give the track number :) ]

AFI - Aurelia - 5/10
completely inoffensive but uninteresting. just middling and "eh". at first I thought he was saying "they're fucking in the wrong key" lul.
