Fox has given a script commitment plus penalty to The Nice Girls, a contemporary female take on the Joel Silver-produced 2016 feature film The Nice Guys, which starred Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe and was co-written and directed by Silver's frequent collaborator Shane Black.

The project hails from Silver Pictures Television through the company's first-look deal at Lionsgate TV and will be a co-production between the two companies and 20th TV.

The Nice Girls will be written by Michael Diliberti, who wrote 30 Minutes or Less for Sony/Columbia. Silver and Rodney Ferrell, president of Silver Pictures Television, will serve as executive producers alongside Diliberti and Ken Kao.

Set in 1977 Los Angeles, The Nice Guys revolves around two very different PIs (Gosling and Crowe) who are forced to team up on a case. The movie was very well received by critics and grossed $60 million at the box office (watch the trailer below).

Rebooting familiar titles with a gender twist is a popular tactic. There are a couple of such projects this development season, including Great American Hero and Kung Fu remakes with female leads.

What's with all these movies getting turned into the shows lately? You got Taken (?), Lethal Weapon, and now this.

I guess it's natural that shows and movies try other mediums, but I just can't get invested in a show based on a movie that came out last year.

There's no way this will be good without the original writers and/or Shane Black, this is fucking dumb.

This will bomb. Most of the reason the movie was great was the chemistry of Gosling and Crowe, and sometimes the daughter.
