Like, getting rid of all my movies and re-buying them on digital formats (or at least just taking the discs and putting them in one of those big binders and getting rid of the cases).

Or getting rid of my stuff that I don't "need", like my collectibles and knick-knacks. But I like having cool stuff on display, and a lot of it was gifts that I'd feel sort of guilty getting rid of.

I often think I'm too dependent on material goods and want to get rid of a lot, then I think "why bother? I already have it."

Do it. It is seriously liberating.

I have a finished basement full of physical media that I have collected over the years (books, video games, movies, etc.). It stays in the basement though, upstairs everything is pretty minimalist.

I recently took a teaching position in a very rural area. Due to limited space in this small farm house I am renting more than half of everything I owned is now in storage.

It is surprisingly nice, like decluttering your head. I'm learning what I can't live without and what i need. I've started a list of what I need to bring back here and it's basically clothes I'll need for winter. I have no game consoles here other than my 3DS and my PC.

Oh yeah books are another thing I have a lot of. Some novels I’d be ok with getting rid of and just using a Kindle, but I also have a lot of art books and such (like those amazing “Making of Star Wars” books) that having on a Kindle just wouldn’t do justice.

I think I just need to get myself a place with lots of closet space or just any kind of storage space.

But part of me loves the idea of being able to just get up and leave if need be and not have lots of stuff to worry about.

Storage unit might help there. They usually aren't that expensive and as long as you pay they don't care what you do with it (as long as you aren't living there or treating it as an office). Want to put up a bunch of book shelves and keep everything organized? Go for it. Want to store a ton of boxes with no organization whatsoever? No problem.

I would like to add a little more minimalism to my life, but its tough when gaming is your main hobby.

I hate having a backlog and a somewhat big collection of games.
I have games and consoles that have been collecting dust for years/months, but I don't know if I could part with them because I never know when I might want to play something in the future...

Yeah that’s always been a thing with me too. I always replay old games. Whether I’m breaking out the Sega Genesis for some ToeJam and Earl, N64 for some Star Fox, or even my 360 to play some Force Unleashed lol. That way I never have to worry about “game droughts”. I actually did a lot of weeding out of games I never play a couple years ago and it was nice. Most of the games I have now are ones that I consider worth keeping.

thats how I actually usually get rid of things. i'll move and when packing i'll be like "ah fuck it I don't really need that" and just leave it for whoever takes the place after me.

though once i'm sure that creeped someone out cause as a kid I collected any weird things I found and I once found part of a dogs jaw bone with teeth still intact. and I left that in a house after moving out.
