I've played all 3.
Witcher 1 in some ways is better than 2 (which is definitely better overall), but both are great. 3 Is the best though, for sure. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Overall there is improvement from 1 to 3. If you've only played 3 going back to 1 or 2 shouldnt be impossible, but its probably not easy to do

I played all 3
1 is great 2 is disorienting for me because Geralt covers 50% of the screen and the minimap doesn't help and everyone has a unique name so you don't even know who gives quests or who is just some random dumb npc --- 2 line break(s), 160 characters allowed ... Copied to Clipboard!

Both are good games, but it should be noted that Witcher 1 is ridiculously clunky. It would probably be very hard to go back to that game after 3, or even Witcher 2. Still, the world and plot kind of make up for it. Witcher 2 is a lot smoother but wasn't quite as interesting to me. I haven't completed all of 3 but it's pretty easily the best one.

Witcher 1 was too difficult for me to play. Not in a 'this game is hard' sense, it was just so clunky that I didn't want to deal with it anymore.
Witcher 2's gameplay isn't good but it's servicable enough. The writing makes up for it. --- Black Turtle did a pretty good job. ... Copied to Clipboard!

Both are great games and their opening cutscenes are really cool too.

I bought them all on sale for $30 two years ago, but was never able to make it through 1. As others have said, it's hella clunky and it quickly became a chore to play. I really wish I could finish it and move onto the others because 3 reviewed so damn well and I haven't heard anyone say a single negative thing about it. But it would be really hard for me to just skip two games worth of story/lore to play it.

I played 2 without playing the original. I was told that I could easily pick up people, places, and lore. That was not the case, but I did thoroughly enjoy it.

But it would be really hard for me to just skip two games worth of story/lore to play it. I mean, if you want to get technical, you'd also be skipping 7 novels worth of story/lore to play Witcher 1! If you just wanted the story, there's a 3-4 hour long 'Witcher 1: The Movie' which is the cutscenes and dialogue + sped up gameplay on youtube. Or you could watch an LP if you want to see the whole thing, and if you go that route I recommend ChristopherOdd's LP- he's pretty like-able, doesn't generally talk over dialogue, and gets really into the lore and characters as the series goes on so he likes to discuss plot points and read all of the books in-game and such (though he usually does them in their own episodes that people can skip if they don't want to read them). ... 3 >>>>> 2
I didn't play 1, but I did play 2 before 3 came out. 2 was good but rough. It's a contained action-RPG that has a great sense of world-building, but the world does kinda feel small. 3, though, completely opens up and is expansive, immersive, and one of my favorite games (#2, sometimes #1). Plus it has two amazing expansions. I've never played 1. I own it, got it for dirt cheap, but never got around to it. I've instead read the first 3 novels in the series which are good. At some point I'll finish all 7. --- ... Copied to Clipboard!

My computer can barely run MS Paint, so Witcher 1 is out of the question.
I played 2 last year and it was still excellent and I fell in love with the world and its characters. Then I played 3 and it totally blew me away. One of the five best games ever easily. --- TimJab - Your 2017 User of the Year! ... Copied to Clipboard!
