The Socialdemocrats re-took power in October 2014 after 8 years of Right-wing rule with massive poorly funded tax cuts for the rich, a substantial deficit and crazy open-border policies. Now we have a major surplus and the lowest national debt since 1977. The national debt is now 24% of our GDP compared to 34% in October 2014.

The Socialdemocrats are also raising military spending and fighting the EU on the removal of our border controls instated in late 2015 as a response to the immigration crisis.

The various right-wing parties on the other hand engage in squabbling and infighting. The current Government hold a minority in Riksdagen but still get loads of stuff passed.

A Right-wing friend of mine is considering voting SocDem for the first time in next year's election :D

These things are possible when you have a small, homogeneous population with the same culture and values. Sweden's population is about the same as New York City's. That's not really an example that can be applied to the U.S. as a whole.

Let's be real. We're going to have World War 3 on our hands if Russia invades a place like Sweden. Like it or not, we live in a globalist society in the civilized world. Sweden won't be alone.

I hear America shouldn't be everyone's security force anyway. We could save billions on our military and put it towards things that actually help Americans here and now and still have the best military in the world.

Having good legal channels for immigration is important so highly educated individuals who wish to move here can do so, but having open unregulated borders is flirting with disaster. Organized crime can move between nations more easily for example.

We are not a NATO member though but it's true Sweden and the US got a military partnership. One thing Sweden does is share our military tech (which is advanced) with the US so it's not a completely one-sided partnership :)

Our 1 year military training known as Värnplikten was removed in 2010 by the Right-wingers ruling at the time with an extremely tight vote (153-150) in Riksdagen. Many experts considered it a bad move since Värnplikten has been an important part of our military for ages. So once the Right-wingers lost power the Socialdemocrats began working on a bill to bring it back and now it is back.

I'd say there are three aspects to it.

* Tradition.

* Making sure a large portion of the nation know what to do in case of a war or other emergency. Survival training and first aid are important skills you are taught.

* Opening the eyes of citizens to what a career in the military might be like, hopefully finding some recruits especially for leadership positions.
