Badlands: 9/10
Days of Heaven: 7.5/10
The Thin Red Line: 9/10
The New World: 8/10
The Tree of Life: 10/10
To the Wonder: 10/10
Knight of Cups: 9.5/10
Song to Song: 8/10

To me, it feels like Terrence Malick didn't master his craft until The Tree of Life. The Thin Red Line was close but there were moments in the movie where the philosophizing wasn't implemented correctly and felt forced. I know Days of Heaven is often revered as Malick's best but there are clear issues with the editing and certain plot points felt rushed. The Tree of Life was his first movie that I think married philosophy, visuals, and story telling near perfectly.

The first time I watched To the Wonder, I couldn't get into it at all. I thought it was his worst movie. Then watching it a second time, everything seemed to fall into place and I thought it was his most poetic and visually stunning movie yet. His movies focus on metaphysical and philosophical themes. It's a difficult task to make a movie regarding such themes without being "pretentious" (which some certainly believe they are) but when the movies "hit" they have potential to evoke the profound.

The only Malick movie I've seen was Thin Red Line, and I thought it was so far up its own ass that I don't want to see any more of them.

His first 3 movies are definitely his most accessible. From then on, his movies take less of a linear approach to storytelling. Starting with The Tree of Life, his movies have little dialogue and most of which are introspective voice overs. He starts focusing more on visual, non-linear, storytelling which I find actually helps the movie become a platform to muse and reflect.

I was going to give Knight of Cups a 10/10 but I think the last 15 or so minutes moves at an incredibly slow pace and could have been trimmed down just a bit. It's still one of my favorite movies of all time. I also thought Michael Fassbender's character in Song to Song was one of the most interesting characters in any of Malick's movies.

I really wish there was a director's cut version of The Thin Red Line. I'm talking like a version of the 6 hour cut he originally delivered to the studio.
