He's not literally saying they are actors and every game is a new play or movie. How do you guys lack the analytics to understand what he is saying? There is no definitive canon. The characters in the universe take on different roles for different games. There is no serious continuity just like Popeye or Bugs Bunny. Each game is relatively self-contained for narrative purposes and the characters can be and do whatever the story requires.

As much as it irks me, I have to admit that's the best approach to take. Sonic the Hedgehog is a clear example of what can happen when a series known for its colorful characters and fun gameplay gets sidetracked by amateur storytelling.

You know, kind of like up until like Wind Waker, every new iteration of Zelda was just kind of supposed to be a new legend until fans went batshit crazy trying to link it all together? So they literally had to make a timeline that made the first bunch of games not even line up with the others to appease them?

That's the kind of situation we are in with Mario. It's not really a hand wave, it's that these are basically god damn cartoon characters, so people should stop over thinking it.

Yeah, I don't get why, but something about the timeline always seems to make people mad and say things like "it was just BSed to appease fans, or it was made cause whiny fans, or blah blah blah fans!!!!!!" When Aonuma literally said they've always been keeping track of it and just never released it. At least until a few years ago. Lol at saying WW forced them to make a timeline.

also, everytime I explain that Aonuma said they always kept track, I've never gotten more than a "nuh uh, it was forced" rebuttal.
