I don't think they ever intended for there to be a Mario "canon". You know, kind of like up until like Wind Waker, every new iteration of Zelda was just kind of supposed to be a new legend until fans went batshit crazy trying to link it all together? So they literally had to make a timeline that made the first bunch of games not even line up with the others to appease them? That's the kind of situation we are in with Mario.
