Honestly, for the first playthrough, don't go out of your way for any sidequests. If you stumble upon a few and feel like questing, then absolutely go for it. But the majority of them are simple gathering quests, some of which you might be able to complete on the spot due to already having the materials on-hand.

I'd save the sidequests for a second playthrough if you want to go for completion, 4th and 5th skill trees, city affinity, and all that other fun stuff.

Right now, just enjoy the story, the characters, and the battles. Save the non-essential stuff for next time.

Monolithsoft knows how to roll with the "monsters destroy the hero's hometome" cliche and fucking amp it up to 11, even if Colony 9 is mostly intact the effect still remains.

Especially with scene where Shulk returns to the park he and Fiora were at earlier that day. And then Dunban comforting Shulk instead of the other way around...pay attention to that guy's characterization. It's remarkably subtle for the genre, but it's definitely there.

Also this, the game's story isn't the best, but there's a lot to it that makes it great.

Yeah Dunban is a war hero through and through. Even though he does give into his urge to get revenge just like all the other characters, he's pretty much the calmest one all throughout the game, no matter how much shit happens.

For me, Shulk's scene with Reyn is a highlight. Even though he's the shut-in nerd type, he's the one who immediately asks Reyn first to go on a quest for revenge, even though all of his friends were most likely willing to wait for him to pick himself up on a long term basis. Takahashi, the writer, did say he wanted to write cliched characters that break out of their cliches, and I think he succeeds for most of the characters. Though Sharla is fucking boring as bricks, but that's another story.

Are the PS1/2 games related in any way? I know the story isn't, but is it the same planet? (or group of planets, I forget if this goes to outer space, for some reason I thought Xenosaga did)

Not really. You can really stretch it out to somehow connect the two series, but the time period wouldn't make sense I think. You can know absolutely nothing about Xenosaga and it wouldn't affect you playing this game whatsoever

And since he's a war hero that everyone looks up to, he knows he can never show weakness, despite clearly being a very emotional and empathetic dude. The scene where Fiora brings him dinner and tries to play it cool, but immediately doubles over in pain once she leaves is telling.

Then there's the extremely easy to miss line where Dunban states that he used to be an alcoholic...

Oh yeah, he does hide it well. Even when he encounters a certain... "foe" and realizes that foe's identity, he loses it for a brief moment but picks himself back up. But given his history, you could almost consider the Xenoblade's journey as just the next big war to him.

Aside from a later partner, Dunban has it the worst out of all of them. =(

Played about 30 minutes. This game is obviously excellent, first impressions

You're going to absolutely love the game then, because the game truly gets even better after about an hour or so in, once you get out of the beginning village and cave. (And once you level up enough to have a bunch of Arts to mess around with.)

What's great about this scene is it takes on a whole new meaning once you beat the game. Not gonna spoil it for TC's sake, but it's pretty fantastic the way they did it.

For all the bosses in the game, you have to make sure to level up your Monado Shield alongside your progress. It's generally good to have that always maxed out. When you see an enemy attack with the white font and some numbers after it, the Shield blocks the numbered attacks corresponding to its level

So Bite I can be blocked by Monado Shield I and Bite VII can be blocked by Shield VII etc.

The red and blue/purple attacks can't be fully blocked, but you'll have other ways around them later

I really need to beat xenoblade. I'm pretty sure I'm near the end but I need to grind cause I keep missing auto attacks against a boss, and my party can't stay alive for long

I have it on the 3ds as well so I might start over again on that
