Monolithsoft knows how to roll with the "monsters destroy the hero's hometome" cliche and fucking amp it up to 11, even if Colony 9 is mostly intact the effect still remains.

Especially with scene where Shulk returns to the park he and Fiora were at earlier that day. And then Dunban comforting Shulk instead of the other way around...pay attention to that guy's characterization. It's remarkably subtle for the genre, but it's definitely there.

Yeah Dunban is a war hero through and through. Even though he does give into his urge to get revenge just like all the other characters, he's pretty much the calmest one all throughout the game, no matter how much shit happens.

For me, Shulk's scene with Reyn is a highlight. Even though he's the shut-in nerd type, he's the one who immediately asks Reyn first to go on a quest for revenge, even though all of his friends were most likely willing to wait for him to pick himself up on a long term basis. Takahashi, the writer, did say he wanted to write cliched characters that break out of their cliches, and I think he succeeds for most of the characters. Though Sharla is fucking boring as bricks, but that's another story.
