It's our busy season so the owner approved any and all overtime until the end of the year. This is company wide so all shifts and both departments (shipping and production).

I'm only the manager for 3rd shift shipping so I have six employees to deal with.

I took a poll on Tuesday when I found out about the overtime asking which day of the weekend (Saturday/Sunday) they would be most willing to come in. 5 out of the 6 said Sunday. The other said he couldn't work during the weekend.

4 of the 5 said they would come in tonight for a full 8 hour shift.

Only 1 fucking person showed up. 1 of the other 3 texted me saying she couldn't make it because of her children. I told her it was fine, but I'm going to have to count it as a call off because she said she would come in.

The other 2 didn't even bother to let me know they weren't going to be here.

The handbook says one no call/no show is terms for a write up and a suspension of one day without pay. I can't exactly do that tho since we are so busy and it would just put more work on everyone else.

In your opinion, how should I handle this?

Write them up. There really isn't anything else you can do. Just like most hourly jobs, the employees are important as fuck and short of doing drugs on the job basically can't get fired because they are needed.

Yeah I already filled out the forms. I'm just hesitant to suspend them since it wasn't a normally scheduled day.

This is why I didn't want to take this management job. These hard calls aren't my thing

Maybe just give them a warning this time and make it clear they will be written up or suspended or possibly even let go if they say they're going to be there and no call no show. It will be treated as a regular shift and they will be treated as such.

Yeah think I'm just going to write them up and give them a free pass on the suspension.

Idk tho, we'll see tomorrow when I sit them down and talk about why they didn't feel the need to atleast text me.

The official procedure for calling off is to call the shop line and leave a message or ask for the manager on duty. 8 hours before you're scheduled to start.

It's all you can do. Just be sure to note in the write-up that you aren't going easy on them, the lack of suspensions in no way diminishes the infraction.

Did you tell them it was mandatory overtime? If not, you can't right them up. Everywhere I've worked with voluntary overtime, it was exactly that. You can come and go as you please.

a little fear tactics might not hurt if they take you seriously at all. used to have a boss that used it too much to the point no one payed him any mind though, always coming around saying hes put a ad in the paper for new hires was his idea of motivating people. may have worked had he not overdone it or the fact that us being behind schedule was half his fault.

Did you make it clear you were expecting them to come in and not just asking what days they'd be willing to come in in the future if they wanted to work over time? Your op didn't make it seem like over time was mandatory just that over time was approved if they wanted it.

I didn't tell them they had to come in, I asked what day they would prefer since I wasn't going to do both.

They said Sunday and then told me they would come in this Sunday (yesterday).

I didn't make it mandatory. The one dude that said he can't work weekends and the other one that said he couldn't work this weekend are fine. Just the two that said the would come in and didn't.

So not only were they dumb enough to not go on a day they said they preferred/agreed too, they also let the opportunity of overtime pay go away from them?

If the above is the case that is beyond stupid. Either you're leaving something out or they deserve a write up

Sometimes I realize it's silly how many unemployed people there are because I know some would make it a priority to come in given the same exact situation. Really can't stand laziness, and this was just a perfect example. They really couldn't even send a text message lol? There needs to be more to this story

I really hate the mentality that if you don't want to work overtime you're lazy. Not everyone wants to spend every waking moment at work. Some people work to live, they don't live to work. Just because the opportunity to make extra money is there doesn't mean someone is required to take it. If it's not mandatory, it's not lazy to decline overtime. Some people prefer to have a work life balance that doesn't include spending more time at work than at home doing things they enjoy.

I'm not seeing where I said neglecting an opportunity for overtime makes one lazy, I have no idea where that even came from

From what OP said, these people specifically said they would work an OT shift (of 8 hours, which is pretty generous) and then not only show up, but gave no notification of them not even going to the shift they said they said they would work

It's lazy because not only did you just skip out of work, you didn't even have the courtesy to inform anybody. Also, if it's an OT shift that makes them look worse because they just lost an additional source of money

Have no idea where you came up with that assumption

That still makes it sound like they can come but it's not a set schedule. "Come if you want on a day convenient for you, it's open overtime." doesn't scream set schedule to me.
