He was a kid going through a personal crisis because he had some traumas he hadn't dealt with. Interestingly when I hear people talk about the book IRL everyone respects that, but online the most common thing I see is "he was a horrible person".

Catcher in the Rye is an amazingly well-written book, but the problem is that Holden Caulfield is an insufferable jackass. So, while I totally understand why people would love the book (and heck, I'll admit that I liked it), I can't fathom why anybody would identify with or like him.
