I'm non-white and prefer whatever constitutes as medium.
Recently went to a Vietnamese place and had a spicy peanut pho with beef slices that was overall underwhelming since I've had better Chinese versions but at least the heat level was a little over medium which was fine with me until the next day when it gave me indigestion and came out the other end... --- You are now blinking and breathing manually. http://i.imgur.com/91NC0Cb.mp4 ... I enjoy spicy food, but the problem for me is that I often don't like the flavor that a lot of hot sauces and other things that give food that spiciness have. It really makes me appreciate the few things I've found that are still spicy without the strange flavors.

At Taco Bell I put a packet of diablo, fire and hot sauce in every burrito. A couple of weeks ago I had a bag of extra hot flaming hot cheetos. I love those foods, but those are nearing my limit of enjoyable spiciness. Too much beyond that and I do it for the challenge, not for the taste.
I one, as a penalty, had to each an entire clove of garlic in one bite. Surprisingly (to me anyway) that was by far the spiciest thing I've ever had. I put cayenne in most savory things, but for me that's more or less baseline. The local deli makes a perfect spicy beef jerky using ghost peppers which is close to the upper limit, though. I've been told by people working in the processing building a few blocks away where they do all the curing/smoking/butchering that they have to wear hazmat suits to clean the jerky room after they make a batch of that stuff, hahaha. Sometimes you'll find a largish chunk of a pepper in the bottom of the bag, which are even hotter than the jerky but taste really good since they went through the smoking as well.

It really makes me appreciate the few things I've found that are still spicy without the strange flavors. Ah, yeah, I have a bit of the same problem. Too many "hot" sauces are more tangy than spicy(or at least lack a savory quality), so I don't like them at all. Tabasco, for example. On the other end of the spectrum you have something like Blair's Mega/Ultra Death, which do have a nice flavor but it's very subtle and is drowned out by the heat. --- I SORT GLASS ... I'm German/Scandinavian/Celtic and I generally like things pretty spicy. I make my own hot sauce and love adding Thai Chillis and Jalapenos to anything I can. However, I never order the hottest stuff or tell people I like things spicy when they cook for me, because then it just turns into a pissing contest where they over power all the flavor with spice just so they can go, "Oh yeah? I thought you liked it spicy?".
