I was gonna make it a poll, but I honestly don't even know which cities I'd include in it.

I forgot about that lol. I guess I'd have to buy alcohol the same way I'd have to buy weed, through "unconventional" channels.

lol, every where has downsides, if there weren't any it would cost more

the answer almost certainly isn't in California or any blue state imho but I honestly don't know, which is why I made the topic

I wouldn't cross out all blue states. You probably won't have much luck in CA or NY tho.

Some place in southern NH.
No sales tax and adjacent to lager cities for whatever positives that brings. Plastow is a nice place.

well, other than the NW, the NYC metro pretty much drives prices up in all the other reliably blue states so I expect places like CT and VT etc are pretty pricey too

although again I really dont know

The snowfall around southern NH is not bad. At least not compared to what I grew up with in ME. Live in an apartment and you'll have people take care if that for you.

yes and no

for many places, there is a pretty obvious disparity between housing affordability even when you take into account average salary in hot housing markets like SF, NYC, Seattle, etc

imo this has to do with housing construction essentially, places like SLC and Durham are easier to build in than the Bay Area or Manhattan or even Austin so they're seeing an increase in employment and housing, not just employment

this is states, not cities, but see: https://www.census.gov/content/dam/Census/library/publications/2016/demo/p60-258.pdf

california and NY (plus other high-cost places like CT) look worse with respect to poverty when you take into account the cost of living

NYC is really an outlier. Nothing really compares to it. And it's not like you can't find a nice place to live in upstate ny for decent cost.

Just from the places I've been in ny there's not a lot unless you happen to live one of the other bigger cities like Albany, Syracuse or Rochester.

Hmm, my expectation isn't that there are other plces like NYC, but rather the desirability and jobs in NYC combined with the high cost of living have caused a sprawling mismatch between where people live and where they work so that a disproportionate share of people in NJ and CT and VT etc work in NYC, and this proximity to a higher cost metro pushes prices up for nearby areas.

First you remove any state that has a state income tax.
Then you remove any state that has long periods of cold weather.
You are left with Nevada, Texas, Florida, and Tennessee.

Get rid of Nevada because its a fucking desert.

Never been to Nashville but heard its pretty cool.
Texas seems like it could be ok. Everyone says Austin is a great town.
Florida -- Miami is the GOAT city but the cost of living sucks so take that out for this topic. I would take anywhere in south Florida out too that is on the east coast because of traffic and housing costs. Tampa/Sarasota/St Pete are all pretty cool and the cost of living isn't out of control.

There are other blue states like Illinois, Delaware, or New Mexico that aren't next to NY.

Hawaii also goes blue I believe.

This all depends on what you want. I would need to move to a major urban area because not everyone loves the gays. I also like sports and want access to major league teams.

I also enjoy a night life and food and I hate cold weather. Everyone has different tastes

I wouldn't count NM as reliably blue the way California is, but I guess NY isn't necessarily reliably blue on a state-level either.

Delaware is close to DC/Baltimore/Philadelphia but could have places in the running

I'd probably have to go with Raleigh-Durham so long as you're okay with the sprawl, the summer heat, and don't mind the lack of public transit. Good combo of stuff to do, relatively affordable cost of living, huge job and housing opportunities, and just great food and bar scene with an energetic and eclectic feel.
