There's only so much content there and a lot of questlines aren't conducive to RP

*installs recommended mods in Oblivion*
*Game runs like shit*

*Try content-adding mods for various games*
*The quality difference is obvious and immersion-breaking*

I just don't get the appeal. They're great in GMod or something but in stuff like Skyrim the only tolerable ones I've tried add balance/placement/etc changes and cosmetic updates. But that just improves QoL not increase replayability

I agree wholeheartedly. Skyrim's base is so fucking weak and repetitive, and mods are generally awkward and much worse than the original somehow. I can see it being fun for people who don't play a lot of rpgs

Different folks different strokes.
I cannot understand why people 10th prestige in COD but evidently some people love reset grinding levels.

There's also mods that add in new lands that come with quests too.

If you don't fast travel, then you could probably rack up 1000 hours easily.

Some gamers just like to wander. Hell, I love open world games because they provide nice, mindless time sinks while looking around at places.

That being said, a thousand plus hours is a tad much for essentially any open world game. Think the most I've ever put into one was 250ish combined in Fallout 3.

Mods aren't the reason, my cousin has a 600+ hour save on 360 in skyrim.

The game is just fun.

Yeah, in Skyrim I found myself actually walking / running from place to place instead of fast travelling most of the time. Wandering around in that game is pretty amazing.

Mods

Pretty much this.

I have 650 hours myself, and the grand bulk of that was just from fiddling around with different mods, and I didn't even get to try out everything I had my eye on before Skyrim Special Edition came out. (To which I fully plan on replacing Oldrim with SSE and continue fucking around.)

Of all the mods I've installed, I'd say "Alternate Start - Live Another Life" by Arthmoor had the biggest impact on my willingness to start the game over and over so many times, even if it was for limited bursts where I didn't completely finish the run per say but rather I just spent hours (dozens at a time even) playing up whatever alternate start I went with and carving a path with various little rules in mind to create my own fun.

I can't stand the combat or the empty feeling quests. I wish I could love the game for it's world but the combat is so goddamn awful I can't be bothered.

You're right about the repetitiveness. After you've played the vanilla game for about 20 hours, you start noticing that everything "new" you see is just a variation of everything you saw in the first 20 hours. That being said, I've probably sunken in about 2000+ hours into the game. At least 1000 of them were within the span of a year. I've never managed to complete the main quest, nor do I think I ever will for the reasons I mentioned above. But the reason I've managed to dedicate so many hours into the game is because I keep making new characters. It's fun to play as a warrior that bashes everything in front of you for a while. Then it's fun to play as a mage. The. It's fun to start a new save as a thief that sneaks around your enemies. Then it's fun to start a new character that is some combination of the three. Throughout all my playthroughs, I've found that a thief/mage is the funnest playstyle for this game. But even that gets old after about 50 hours and then it's on to a new character for me.
