Like, if I salt something then put sugar on it, do the two cancel each other out?

s0nicfan posted...No, both in the chemistry and food science senses. The opposite to which? Salt dries something out so you'd want to counter with something like an oil. Sugar sweetens stuff so you'd want to balance it with a tart substance. Chemically both are stable so there isn't really anything that "cancels them out" the way an acid and a base do. --- "History Is Much Like An Endless Waltz. what are you confused about
salt exists on other planets too cause it's just a mineral (aka type of rock powder) sugar is made by living things, plants make it as they absorb sunlight. sugar and salt being opposites doesn't make any sense, they have nothing to do with each other except that we figured out they're both tasty --- ... In a taste sense kind of, but they don't cancel each other out. They just balance each other.
Say for example you were making a thai curry, and you needed to get the right balance of salty, sweet, spicy, fragrant, etc. Then you'd get the salty from...well, salt, the sweet from palm sugar, the spicy from chillis, the fragrant from coriander and lime leaves, etc. So if your curry was too sweet, you'd perhaps add some more salt to balance it. --- CE's Resident Scotsman. http://i.imgur.com/ILz2ZbV.jpg ...
