They're super gifted, but their depression/anxiety/whatever keeps them from being the best at whatever they do.

I think they're just lazy. It's not that I don't believe in depression and stuff, but these people saying that they have the skills to be the world's greatest artist/writer/musician but are held back by their depression make me laugh. Especially because I know a bunch of those people, and their art portfolio has stuff from their art class from high school, and they haven't made anything else since. "Because depression."

And that's why they're all still working deadend retail jobs and haven't advanced. Even after 5 years there.

Bingo. In my case, at least. That, and a lack of true ambition.

Many of my close friends and family believe I could be a successful writer (successful meaning I could make a living at it). Even if I wanted to write for a living, I know that once it became something that was demanded of me, it would stop being fun. Deadlines would stress me out. Doesn't appeal to me in the slightest.
