A church in the south of Sweden held a gathering for families of illegal immigrants when the police showed up unannounced and took five of the six families into custody.

The church is very critical of the actions of the police - churches and their activities are generally regarded as sanctuaries although there isn't any law stating it.

They don't have any legal rights to do so, but they refer to a "rulebook" they find very important to justify their actions: The Bible. They will rather break the law than abandon key principles of their faith about being a good fellow human.

As far as I know, a church is only really a sanctuary in Highlander movies.

I agree. But I also respect that the church stick up for their beliefs despite the new laws - it honour them :)

The super generous immigration laws implemented by the Conservative-Liberal coalition which governed 2006-2014 were repealed and replaced with some of the toughest immigration laws in the EU two years ago. Removing the concept of permanent residency permits, border controls/fences, new family reunification laws only fairly well off people can qualify for, increased deportations, removing the need for a warrant when the police search homes, offices and other buildings for immigrants and so forth.

Most religious people seem to pick and choose which passages they follow. I can't speak for their exact thought process on this.

Church has long been seen as a sanctuary, but it cannot shelter criminals from the cops. The fact that illegal citizenship is a crime is not up for debate.

It's estimated around 1-2 million or one in four "known" illegals use stolen SSN numbers to work and claim benefits.

Why not? It's citizenship that's illegal. Like illegal ID.

No, it's identity theft along with illegal residence.

Legally, it's never been a thing.

And generally, if the officers ever followed it, it would be under the assumption that the religious official inside would do his best to convince you to give yourself up.
