No, CE gets the fine tip.

everything you're saying tells me you're a weak reader and writer, not that my metaphor was bad (it IS bad, but I did what I wanted to do)

In fact you wouldn't even have gotten it had I not pointed it out

You're not trying to paint with a hammer. You're trying to hammer a nail with a paint brush.

I'm not the one who made a horrible metaphor that completely ignores the point it was trying to make. Your writing skills are more in question than my reading skills. The fact that literally nobody would have gotten it had you not pointed it out does not imply that our reading skills are trash. It's more likely to imply that you did a very shitty job of communicating your intention and standpoint.

Also, there is a very large difference between these two stances on affirmative action:
1. Minorities should get preferential treatment.
2. Minorities should not be treated differently than anybody else.

I do not believe that a black guy should get a job over a white guy simply because of the fact that he was born black. I believe that the black guy should get the job over a white guy if and only if he is more qualified for that position than the white guy. The same holds for hiring a white guy over a black guy for a job. And if you find that they are both equally qualified throughout the interviewing/evaluating process, then you have probably screwed up that process and there are flaws in your evaluation system. That being said...flip a coin if you have to.

I am personally against affirmative action in the form of preferential treatment of minorities. I am for it in the form of removing the already-existing prejudices that place minorities on their heels before the evaluation process even begins. Since the latter option is extremely unlikely to actually occur in society as it stands today, I lean more towards the preferential treatment due mostly to the fact that since white people do already have "an edge" when beginning the evaluation process for a job because of those prejudices, it is slightly more fair to give "an edge" to the minority should they still be in the running at the end of the process.

Everything you're telling me right now just says you think you can't make a metaphor about race relations without inserting race into the metaphor

It is possible.

You did not do it here.

me : white people
coworker : minorities

getting a raise + benefits : gaining social progress/power

inter-office division : civil war

complaining when im still getting paid more/gonna get a raise : white people complaining about white genocide even though that's not happening

I don't see how I did it wrong

Just because I purposefully made it obtuse lmao

Is he white, black, native American, what? You're Asian iirc

If he started in a warehouse I feel you'd be qualified. But nepotism so idk.

Honestly I'm not sure what you want.

Unless this shit is completely hypothetical, they might be preparing to fire you and pay him more when you're gone

Can you just tell me the point

Because there's a much more relatable explanation for everything in your metaphor that has little or nothing to do with race. If you want people to think about race, you have to give some indication that's the direction you intend.

For example, "You" are simply the boss's son who gets to skate by due to being the boss's son. Everyone relates to that, regardless of race. The "coworker" could be simply an average working-class guy who's trying to get by. The supposed raise that isn't even enough to get that average Joe onto the same level as the boss's son is less obviously about minorities and affirmative action and more obvious as a greedy company underpaying their employee while still expecting them to take on more responsibilities. I can't remember the last job I worked where I didn't see at least one person in this situation. The inter-office conflict is just basic workplace drama that happens literally everywhere for even the most basic of reasons. It's less likely to be equated to the Civil War and more likely to be equated to people feeling like they should have gotten the raise instead of the other guy (I've been here longer, it should've been me instead of him, etc.)

Literally everything has an easier and more familiar explanation than race and affirmative action. And there was no mention of anything to lead a reader in that direction other than the whole "staging a sit-in" comment, but the topic was already off the rails by that point. Face it, your setup was poor and so you didn't get the response you wanted. It's got very little to do with a failing on the reader's part, though.
