A&M and Sam Houston have cancelled classes due to weather.

I have some friends who are driving INTO the houston area to be with their families. that sounds like an awful awful awful idea.

Yes, that is a terrible idea. The roads are a mess and odds are all they are going to do is end up getting stuck somewhere and be one more person that needs to get rescued.

Just helped a friend of my mom's and her mother from the back of the neighborhood up to our place, where the water level is much more manageable at the moment, lugging the luggage and floating a stuff filled bucket across the water in barely waist high water (if you're a shorty that is.)

Quite exciting, I need a cup of tea now. Or a 40. Maybe both.

But, the news is saying this is unprecedented. Entire portions of the city will need to be demolished and rebuilt. Infrastructure will need to be rebuilt. Basically, we'll need a whole new Houston. That'll be years.

Not surprising, my area is a "near impossible" place to get flood insurance due to being below sea level and on the coast of a great lake. Basically if I wanted flood insurance added to my current home owners insurance policy, it would cast almost twice as much as it does now. All that despite the fact that my area hasn't been flooded in about a million or so years.

In Florida it is mandatory to get flood insurance to own a home; banks won't lend to you if you are don't. I think it's worth the cost if you live in an area that is highly susceptible to tropical systems.
