Illegal here. From what I understand, though, it's not enforced very much in this area.

legal only if smoked in residential housing. (can buy only if 18 and within the legal amount) at all times.

My fwb David was caught with less than 5 grams, like 3 I think or something on the train to Sweden from Denmark. He had to pay a huge fine, and pay to the crime-victim thingy, go to court iirc as well. Then got a 5 year record on him whatever so he can't get a new job without them finding out about it etc.

And he works in the taxi business, he would've been fired from his current job if they ever found out, luckily he avoided that for 5 years, but he also got stuck there for 5 years as he couldn't get a new job..

My point is, it's extremely illegal in Sweden, you go to prison after certain amount (which shouldn't be much) I dunno, but it gives such consequences and labels you into a "fucking druggie scum" pretty much.

can understand if stealing would get one in trouble when it comes to getting jobs that handle money or products but its really lame to not be hired at all because of some weed.

In DC you can grow, carry, and smoke your own in some pretty small amounts. Can give gifts but can't buy or sell. I don't remember any of the details or know how enforcement works, but I do know congress tried to kill these rules through budget maneuvers when they were passed a few years back.

In NY, possession has apparently been dropped to a fine for the first two offenses (with 25g or less). Selling it, growing it, or possessing more than 25g is still criminal though, unfortunately.

In WA, it was treated like alcohol. Anybody 21+ could go into a store and choose from display cases of different kinds of weed, edibles, pipes, etc. Smoking it in public could lead to a fine, like with alcohol, but I've seen people smoke right across the street from a cop and they didn't do a thing.

Legal where I come from but illegal where I am now. I live in the south so...

You're both wrong. Sure, lots of people smoke it but it's extremely illegal and there are people, both foreign and Thai with prison terms in the Bangkok Hilton for small amounts of weed.

The average price for bribing your way out of jail for weed is in the 30,000 baht range ($1,000USD) and that's if you offer the bribe quickly before other people get involved.

If you want to smoke freely in SEA then stick to Cambodia. The islands in Thailand are relatively safe if you aren't completely stupid about it. But saying there is no risk is really ignorant seeing as how foreigners are thrown into jail here every day for small amounts of weed.

It's legal here. The rules are basically the same as alcohol (gotta be 21 and can't use before or while driving). The local law enforcement made a huge concession, so I see no reason for people to not follow simple rules.

People are going to buy weed, one way or another, whether it's legally or illegally. Why not just control the money?

Average bribe is way lower than that, I've had friends get away with 5k baht after being caught with an 8th at a checkpoint. Any of the bars that you can buy joints from are safe, they pay off the police and mafia.

Until they get raided because someone forgot to pay their tea money. Happens all the time. A hostel in Bangkok got hit that way. A bunch of foreigners tested positive for weed and got locked up and that was for just testing positive, not even having any on you. I have a bar that I visit multiple times per week like this but I'm not delusional enough to think that I'm 100% safe from police while there.

I know 2 people who got caught in Chiang Mai, one paid 30k the other paid 40k. Might get lucky with a small bribe in the middle of no where like Issan or certain spots in Bangkok but any area with lots of tourists, you're going to be shaken down for a lot more. Hear stories of people in Phuket, Samui, Phangan, etc getting shaken down for 20-40k all the time.

It's still highly illegal and treated like one of the most dangerous contraband drugs for some reason. Possession of even small amounts can be punished by prison time. Because of this, though, lots of police officers just destroy it and use alternate charges like 'disturbing the peace'. It's still illegal to buy a bottle of liquor from anywhere in PA but state government run stores, so I doubt it's going to change anytime soon. The state government of PA is one of the most corrupt in the nation, so it's not about the people or logic, it's about making sure state legislators get dem bribes, and nobody is spending millions in bribes to get weed legal when the alcohol industry can't even manage it.
