“A little,” Söderlund admitted to EDGE in their October issue when asked whether Nintendo Switch has blindsided the games industry – especially after the disappointing consumer reaction to Wii U.

“It’s doing really well, which I love. But I’ll be honest, when they first showed it to me years ago, I didn’t get the concept, I was puzzled by it. But then I was like, it’s Nintendo. They probably understand something that I don’t [laughs]. They usually do.

“I have a four-year old son and it’s like it’s connected to him. He will use it as a portable machine, he will plug it into the TV, but more importantly, he uses it like, ‘Do you want to play with me?’ Then he takes off the Joy-Con and we play Mario Kart together. He’s using it as intended, which just tells me that it’s working right.

“I think it’s a pretty special machine because it’s not just more of the same. I looked at it and thought, why would you play on that instead of this? But now it’s crystal clear to me why. That’s the Switch.”

EA is made up entirely out of touch suits who have absolutely no background in videogames.

Is it really a surprise they don't get the Switch? Like I get it's you and all but come on

I don't think EA have a clue on how to handle anything that isn't shooter/sports fans on Xbox and PlayStation.

This. Old and out-of-touch executives being old and out-of-touch is nothing to be surprised about.

Actually, I take that back. There is one guy I know of at EA who has a background in videogames to some extent

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Moore_(businessman)

He helped kill Sega as a console maker and helped MS get a solid foothold in the industry

This is just darmik trying to distract from the lack of third party support. Unless the switch sells more units than PS4 + Xbox One there's more money in multiplats.

Didn't Peter Moore join Sega when the ship was already sinking? I don't think the Dreamcast's failure was his fault.

I don't have an issue with Peter Moore tbh. His time with Xbox was pretty much when they were at their peak.

No, the Switch will be a place where publishers dump last gen ports to the Switch and charge 60 bucks. We've seen it with Skyrim, we've seen it with Payday 2, and we'll continue to see it

He helped broker the deal to get the Xbox all those Sega exclusives and he has a reputation of being a slime ball in general from his time at both MS and SoA.

Quit pretending you know anything about this industry or trying to play devil's advocate for a slimey soulless executive who fucked over countless people and ruined countless careers

Nintendo consoles have been in a steady state of market decline since NES, with Wii and the portables being a wildcard. Caution about Switch is completely understandable.

Okay? That's not what the quote is though. There's literally nothing confusing about the Switch's concept.

Pretty much all of the portables have been successful and EA have never cared anyway. As I said they don't know anything outside of appealing to the sports/shooter market on consoles.

from that it sounds like he didn't understand why you'd want something that is both a gameboy and a super gameboy at the same time, rather than a dedicated handheld or dedicated console

but his kid uses it the way it was intended so now he understands why someone would want that

is there something Im missing?

He doesn't love Nintendo he just loves corporations. In every situation he will always bend over backwards to defend multibillion dollar corporations over consumers

I assume he means he doesn't understand why a business would pursue that kind of development, not that he doesn't understand the idea itself. its a p short article though

Honestly it's just another example that Nintendo and EA are basically polar opposites in the industry. That's not exactly criticism of either company but there's really not much of a middle ground between them.
