I just made an account the other day and tried browsing the site. The layouts and arrangement of upvotes over new posts is literally the ugliest and worst thing i've ever seen on a message board. it's unbelievable how many people use that place

There are some good subreddits, if you look outside the default ones.

I have to admit that the layout is a bit shit though. I think there are extensions to improve it, but I've never used them myself.

Haha. Also, I'm sure there's a setting to determine what it defaults to.

Reddit isn't really for discussion. You're supposed to read/watch/listen to the content. Everything below is basically a youtube comment.

Reddit isn't designed to see everyone's opinion and posts, it's designed to silence anyone who deviates from the hivemind mentality of whatever subreddit you're on by collapsing and hiding posts with no or few upvotes and putting the ones with the most upvotes at the top to ensure that's the mentality that's followed like cattle to a slaughterhouse

It depends on the subreddit really.

r/truegaming is for more in-depth gaming discussions (r/patientgamers isn't bad either), for example. Whereas the more popular gaming subreddits tend to have shitty memes and crappy discussions.

Reddit is good as a content aggregator and information trove. If you lazily want to browse through memes of a very specific subcategory with minimal page hopping and ads, reddit is your friend. If you want to get into a specific hobby and speak to people who are in that hobby, reddit is your friend.

But if you want to have an engaging conversation or get involved with politics or really say anything that's not aligned with the status quo, reddit is a fucking nightmare.

I mean, you guys are right, and tc is right. Reddit is a shitty website with a garbage layout, and 4chan is on a whole other lever of shit. The truth of one statement does not make the other false.

What I hate most about Reddit is that at the end of the day... I still go back to it because there's literally nothing better, otherwise I would be at the better site. It's pretty much like youtube except without the videos.

it's hilarious going into an unpopular opinion thread and seeing all the actual unpopular opinions downvoted to oblivion, every time.

it only does that if you tell it to.

you can sort comments by various metrics, including 'controversial', which is when things get interesting.

It's a fine layout for what it's supposed to be. People expect the wrong thing from the site.

Gotta appreciate, the creators of reddit would have at this point consulted with some of the top IA guys in the business. They would have been pitched all sorts of redesigns and would receive an endless amount of suggestions. But if there's a better way to display that amount of information, I don't know what it is. It's not a forum, after all.

It's sad though when that unpopular opinion is the only one rooted in facts and coming from someone with experience or technical knowledge. You see this a lot in subreddits that have a particular culture in them.

For example, if you went onto /r/talesfromretail, and your opinion was anything other than "all customers are satan and all customer service workers are heroes", you're going to get downvoted to fuck. Reasonable suggestions like "maybe don't take your part time hospitality job so seriously" are never going to be well received on a subreddit like that.

The other thing I've noticed is people jumping on the bandwagon of comment upvotes/downvotes. I've seen the same exact comments receive either overwhelming praise or overwhelming assblasting, depending on whatever amount of karma it starts with.
