I was born in 93, so i barely pass the barrier.

Then again i play them in 2012 and once i got past the clunk, beneath was a treasure trove of quality content made by passion

Because you played them and other similar games when you were a kid so you have experience with old game jank. GCN era forward starters would be bewildered by the entire game

Fallout 1,5: resurrection was the adopted son. He is still considerably talented and loved even when they dont share the same blood, most people consider he is a part of the family and a great addition

The upcoming (in english) fallout: Nevada is the same

I still don't understand the high reviews. I wish I could like it like so many people seem to. But it's trash

i like how NV built and improved upon 3 in pretty much the same way that 2 built and improved upon 1.

Yah.

But 1 still has the best choice and consequences mechanics. It is really the nost daring of them all, like how you can utterly fail because you cut short the deadline by talking too much, or get information to get the final boss kill himself or destruction of a whole city in a meaningful way (not like megaton hurr durr i am evil look i can set of a nukr in that town!)

Fallout 3 and 4 are perfect examples of a company taking over an existing properties and not really understanding what made the originals great and instead just relied on the branding and imagery.

In any other medium it would have been torn to shreds.

Even forca shooter fallout 4 is lacking because the weapons are simply too boring and the customiZation has usefulness bias instead of being balanced where every type is useful.

Fallout 4 was good

it was a good SHOOTAN GAEM with Minecraft mode

it wasn't a good Fallout game

Yeah I think this is accurate. They did a good job of piquing my interest with the cool guns they throw at you early on as well as cleaning up your old town for settlement building.

But man, the characters suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. It's astounding. There is not a single character memorable in a good way except for Valentine and the fetish-insert android girl.

Settlements are fucking lifeless and nobody does anything with the shit you built

Voice acting for your character is so dumb

The main quest plot has the foreshadowing of a four year old's Phineas And Ferb Fanfiction

And yet it gets consistent 9s in the reviews IIRC. It's like reviewers just played three hours and said "yep pretty good"

You guys really shouldn't be bashing 3 in hindsight it did well at the time especially with transitioning the series to 3D it was a big risk and it worked out.

The settlement woukd be a decent idea if it is onky your homestead and several other places, instead they made it fucking every settlement souless, lacking personality modifiedable garbage.

It literally has no context that villagers allow you to build their villages just because you retrieved a dead daugther necklace or something.

It is literally moronic

Tbh after Fallout 4 it wouldn't surprise me if the next game is an online coop survival shooter with not much actual role playing at all.

Which is probably for the best under Bethesda. Making up a fortress with friends to defend against a Super Mutant invasion would be fun. Not really what I'm personally looking for but it seems like the obvious next step for the franchise after 4.

It did well because it was a post-apocalyptic open world Bethesda game. Which was insanely popular after Oblivion.

It had nothing to do with it being a good follow up to Fallout 2 or being a faithful transition for Fallout into 3D.

I know. That's what I mean. It didn't make a difference to most people that Bethesda didn't really get a lot of what made Fallout special. A Bethesda RPG is very different style and the way they set up the writing/lore is very different. It would have been successful even if it was a new IP set in a post-apocalyptic world.

With a video game this doesn't really matter. If it was a TV show, movie or book it would have been torn to shreds because all they have is the story and source material to build on.

A story that begins as a basic search for your lost family evolves into something much more complex and morally nuanced

Cut your bullshit IGN pod people are not a revolutionary concept

crumbling high school with heads on pikes outside? I bet there’s great loot in there!

Ah so this is the mindset they adopt

These might be more general, jack-of-all-trades types than previous Fallout character builds, in that you generally don’t have any crippling deficiencies, but they definitely have their distinguishing features that’ll make one playthrough feel different from the next. And before you lament it as a “dumbing down” of Fallout’s overall complexity, turn your eye to the new crafting and equipment progression system, which has picked up the slack by becoming vastly more complicated and interesting.

It's shit though

A fully voiced male or female protagonist is a first for Fallout, but I frankly don’t feel like it added much beyond the convenience of not having to read as much text when playing from the couch. It doesn’t get in the way, either - performances are fine, if somewhat bland - and would only be objectionable to me if I’d envisioned my character’s voice as something outlandishly different. So it’s successfully unobtrusive, at least.

Between this and how a huge chunk of the review between this and the last quote was about the shooting, I see the reviwer doesn't actually care about RPG elements outside of the perks that he admitted are dumbed-down and make jack of trade characters

Next they say the settlement system is just sort of there and basically irrelevant

And then somehow this becomes a 9.5/10: "Amazing." Like, WTF? Everything they actually write about besides the shooting they makesound alright at best or mediocre to bad.

Mainstream game reviews are paid shills. No surprise here. Most of these people arent even gamers. They are just some content writers searching for a job and landed in games media.

Its a flawed system.

They want to review a game but only take a couple of hours to do so. Especially to meet deadlines.

If I played F4 for 5 hours I would think its fantastic- but for a full playthrough I'd realize how devoid it is of any real feel.

Theres like what, 4 towns? Diamond city, good neighbor, that 1 vault, and that 1 fort like place that is just a front.

The "huge weapon customization" they boasted is shallow. Lv 4 mods are always better than lv 1 2 or 3. Its not variety. Its power creep.

So yeah these reviews are inaccurate for the players who intend to go longer than 5 hours or however little they play.
