This could easily be a mobile/phone app since they constantly lock down all the emulators, it'd be perfect for a touchscreen device.

Depends on if they include other companies. I can think of a fair few games that would be acceptable.

Edit - Now with a list of games that would be worth playing IMO
Bionic Commando
Bomberman series (including Wario Blast spinoff)
Contra series
Double Dragon
Dragon Warrior series (both main series and Monsters spinoff)
Final Fantasy Adventure
Final Fantasy SaGa
Game Boy Camera (they wouldn't even need to make it like the bulky original)
Game & Watch Gallery series
Gargoyle's Quest
Gradius: The Interstellar Assault
Kirby's Dream Land series
Mario series (including Wario spinoffs and Dr Mario)
Mega Man series
Metroid II: Return of Samus
Pokemon series (main series, Pinball and Trading Card Game)
R-Type series
Rampart
Solar Striker
Street Fighter 2
Tetris (including spinoffs)
The Legend of Zelda series

The system could even support local wireless connections for multiplayer. And if Camera was on there, an ability to upload content elsewhere. :P

I'm meaning companies that they might not do with current stuff. Old Square and Capcom stuff, sure, but I'm not sure about other companies. If they are even around still.

DQ:M and some of the others were GBC iirc? At any rate, even if I got one of the RBY, it's still not an overwhelming lineup.

Some of the games can do either grayscale or colour.

For example, Dragon Warrior Monsters came out before the Gameboy Color got a release.

It was released for the Game Boy Color before the console itself was released; however, the cartridge is backward compatible with the older Game Boy console in black-and-white color.

Why doesn't Nintendo just release these games people can play on emulators on their PC and phone for a reasonable price befitting of their age on the eShop.

These games are not ported, they're just run off of an emulator.

It did not contain Super Mario Bros Special.
Or that Nippon spriteswap game.
And it was actually rereleased with Super Mario World included on the cartridge.

this looks stupid.

just either get an actual gameboy, or use an emulator.

all this does is use actual cartridges and displays the game on your phone.

I don't think I would want this unless they gave some color upgrades, even if it was just a palette selector like the Super Game Boy. Then you have the issue of the screen size being something you want to make bigger, not smaller. You could easily do that, but not without sacrificing the whole idea that these are supposed to look like near-exact, scaled versions of the original.

Because Nintendo thinks emulation is evil, and would never in a million years admit that they download roms and sell them on the eShop, even though we know they do.

I've been saying this the entire time.

For the full experience, they could have released a wireless NES/SNES controller compatible with the Wii U or whatever that came with an eShop download code for the "Classic NES Collection" or "Classic SNES Collection". The Classic Collection could also be downloaded independent of buying the controller, in the event that someone doesn't care for the controller.

They could have done that alongside the gimmicky physical mini console they released.

Quite a few of those titles like Dragon Quest were exclusive to the Gameboy Color (Gameboy Classic would only contain original Gameboy titles.)

There was only one Zelda title on the Gameboy (not counting the DX version which was just the same game with an added dungeon exclusive to Gameboy Color) and not counting the Gameboy Color Exclusive Oracle games.

Tetris wouldn't be on it because of licensing problems.

Pokemon would only be up to Yellow, maybe Gold and Silver.

Dragon Quest is mostly Gameboy Color Exclusive.

If I was making the list, I would replace Dragon Quest with the Donkey Kong Land Series.

I would probably replace Tetris with Kirby's Star Stacker being both are puzzle games.

most of those are shitty downsized versions of SNES and NES games (contra 3, megaman, LOZ), aged horribly (metroid 2, there is a reason for it getting remade) or just bearly mediocre (like SML, double dragon, etc).

realistically it would include games from that, too, but since it's nintendo it would be a regular gameboy/color classic, and then later a gameboy advance classic.

and honestly, it would make a hell of a lot more sense to just make it a collection for the Switch. they could even just make the physical device itself, and then a cheaper switch alternative.
