Are you surprised it bombed?

It appears that war of the planet of the apes bombed considering it's massive 150M budget and only made 240M worldwide so far despite being the best of the series...

Ghostbusters had a 144M budget and made only 229M worldwide and that was a bomb so it appears war of the planet of the apes did as well......

surprising considering it made 500M just in foreign sales for the last planet of the apes...

Less and less people are going to the theaters when they get a better experience at home for a fraction of the price, with way more comfort, and not much later then the movies release.

My century theater upgraded to really comfy seats, is $8 before 4 (although concession stuff is still insane), and only $5 all tuesday...and still you never see even 1/3 of the seats filled. I mean, they could pretty much put individual couches/beds etc in the theaters now with as many people are usually there.

The reason is simple, you can get a movie on demand on your TV (through tons of methods) for $6 not much llonger after it's released, or often get it 2 weeks faster then that for $1.50 a day from dvdxpress kiosks that are all over (is redbox getting replaced?). Even if you don't return the movie for 3-4 days, it would still only cost you $5 max, and you can watch it over awhole weekend etc.

The ONLY time I have seen my local theater fill up (or mostly) is on 5$ tuesdays at night (after work) since there are a ton of people who would normally have to wait till the weekend, or shell out $11 a ticket for those times.

So yeah, not surprising that even a good movie doesn't do that well, especially if it's not one kids are going to try and drag their parents to.

honestly the marketing for this movie wasn't that good. never saw any ads, commercials, anticipated trailer reveals, no one really talked about it. I just know it's supposed to be good based on critic reviews. Saw the previous 2 movies which were surprisingly entertaining.

I didn't really like the second 2 so i wasn't enthused. But I'll still go eventually.

But it's super hard to go to the theatre anymore. They only have 3d showings after 5:30 pm. So i basically don't go until they are in second run theatres 2 months later and in 2d.
If they dropped this 3d shit i bet viewership would increase. I saw a dramatic fall in viewers since last year when people finally got sick of 3d. I've gone to the movies every Tuesday for 15 years now. So i see the trends.

i'm not suprised planet of the ape isn't as pop culture as it was back in the 70's 80s. I'm suprised they made 250 million, but that's just world wide.

Whoever projects sales needs to be fired. It only failed because it didn't hit what that person said it would make. But it still got it's money back. Actor will still get some bonus profits for doing the movie. It's still a win win situation.

i didn't see the second/third one.

i love the original 70s - 80s movies. The james franco was alright.

I want to see this one, but i need to see the second one before i watch this one.

I've started waiting for movies to pop up at the semi local second-run theatre. I love the Apes universe so I'll see this if/when it shows there

Don't really see how that's a bomb, especially when it will still have rental and DVD sales.

This planet of the apes shit has gotten old, so hopefully they stop churning them out so fast.

Wikipedia says that the movie made back its budget, so I don't see how the movie can be a bomb as opposed to just underperforming.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_for_the_Planet_of_the_Apes

That said, if I'd known the movie was going to be mostly about the apes, I might not have gone. I wanted to see more of how the regular people were dealing with everything. That's just me, of course.

It was a cool take on the origin story with the first one in this series, but I lost interest after that. It just turned into "humans are assholes and do it to themselves" and it frustrates me. Not because it's ridiculous, but because it's not. And we're going to do it with A.I. and suffer dearly.
