Apparently that was rude and Condescending of me to ask a customer at my checkout. >_> she bitched for about a minute to me about how it is none of my business how her day is and I was very rude to ask. She was full on yelling at me.

many retail customers don't count as human beings tbh. It's like their brain gets switched out when they enter a store.

It happens some times. Don't let it discourage you from being friendly, otherwise you will just be miserable at work.

No, but I have interacted with at least one human being.

When you're in a retail position there's about 5% of the population who doesn't believe you are a human being and is willing to unload all their personal baggage on you, because you must be some kind of automaton or something. It's very different from interacting with people on an equal basis.

When I worked at a bar and cafe, people would lose their fucking minds because you made their specialty cocktail "wrong", as if it should be part of the job requirement to be a master at mindreading. Or they just couldn't understand why you wouldn't get it that when they said "coffee" they meant "extra strength decaf with a half sugar and exactly one teaspoon of milk".

Someone freaking out over saying hello is nothing, I had an old man freak out at me because I moved my hair out of my face, had a woman bring her husband in to threaten me because we wouldn't return her used nose rings (Gross) even though the bill said "No refunds"...twice.

And that's not even mentioning the 24 hour restaurant I worked at. Drunk country bros are fun...

I swear this happened. I have served her before. She is just a fucking psycho. I guess she was having a snotty day and got offended when I said "how are you?" But yeah she just started yelling at me about how rude it is to ask her that and how it pisses her off. Some middle aged women especially are fucking mental at times.

That shit is utterly ridiculous to me. Like, would you really want to keep your money in a bank that has no security precautions? Or when they take out larger amounts that require secondary ID and they wig out.

Guy pulls up to drivethru and hands over withdrawal slip. I ask for ID and he gets all pissed. Finally get it from him. He's not on the account. I tell him and he gets mad again and says it's his brothers account. Can't help him so he leaves.

Most of the time though it of course is actually the account signer. Usually it's an older person who thinks because they've had the account so long that all employees should magically know them.

Where do you live? This seems common in the south for where workers/people in business always ask how you are or are overly nice

though in NYC, most people don't seem to ask or care.

Back when I was a cashier, I would only ever say hello to a new customer. If they wanted to continue from there, I could oblige them. If not, even happier to say nothing more. Really didn't need to have the same conversation with 100 people a day.

We have small talk in lines, with cashiers, waiting for buses, it happens all the time. For a lot of us, at least.

This apparently is not a thing that translates well to other countries.
