I can't recall anything I've seen that was out and horror per se. Just action shows that were completely fucked up, either for having scary villains (Psycho Pass), being a gorefest (Elfen Lied, Vampire Hunter D, Pet Shop of Horrors), or just outright depressing (Madoka, Casshern Sins, Red Garden). Hell, Ghost Stories is SUPPOSED to be horror, but that was turned into a hilarious comedy because the dub actors got drunk and said "To hell with this. Let's party." (Not really, no actors were harmed in the chopping up of a shitty anime).

But seriously, Ghost Stories from a visual standpoint, because Ghost Hunt is total shit in comparison for being played straight. I've read a manga called Parasyte that was pretty fucked up. I just haven't seen the anime adaptation yet.

I don't think anime is very effective at doing horror. can't think of any examples I've seen that even remotely scared me.

I liked Shiki. It's a premise that sounds like a horror, but I wouldn't really call it horror itself, so make of that what you will.

It's also super slow-paced, just to mention that ahead of time.

In general though yeah I don't especially think anime is a medium where horror works very well, or at least no one's figured out how from what I have seen.

Higurashi is probably the only anime I've seen that qualifies as "scary," but I recommend it because it's good.

Paranoia Agent might be the closest? But I mean, I feel like even that's a bit of a stretch. It's more psychological tension I think.

Paranoia Agent isn't so much "horror" as "thriller" but it is absolutely incredible. My favorite anime period.

Monster was another one I thought about mentioning. But the problem is I felt like if I went there I could start listing a ton of other things that have elements of psychological horror but probably don't fit as an answer here.

Like Madoka, and particularly Rebellion, have some pretty disturbing things going on. So does Black Lagoon and Evangelion and Steins;Gate and so on, but man I'd never call Steins;Gate a horror lol. >_>

Well I don't think he was asking for horror anime, just anime that scared us.

For some reason I think anime is a tough genre to create horror elements with. I think it's coz almost everything in anime is already so over the top that it's hard to create that "this is out of place" or "this is totally wrong" feeling that traditional horror tends to evoke.

Anyway, Elfen Lied unsettled me but that was when I was younger and had never seen anything with that level of gore in it.

Although these three fit in more "fantasy/drama" than horror, you might enjoy these too.

Kino's Journey (a journey into fucked up places with fucked up people)
Mushi-Shi (no real storyline, just you like more religious/fantasy/mystical weird shit and good visuals)
Hell Girl (Though the first few episodes REALLY get repetitive. The latter part of the series gets good)

Yes, given how I phrased it. Fucked up in this case meaning what Kino sees. It's like those Ys games where the main character keeps going to random places for the hell of it. Only instead of monsters and macguffins, Kino ends up finding people and cultures that are...off-putting. That's the best way to narrow it down.

Hell, I barely remember most of the episodes since my last watch was a couple years ago. All I know is nothing is what it seems. No fancy visuals. No blood (I think). Just nuanced and subtle, almost perverse situations.

Kino's outfit isn't something I would associate with the character. Too damn stylish; It's like something the Ouran Host Club would wear. Though I doubt's the hint.

No, the fact that she's being sexualized there is the issue, so close enough. Could just be promotional material, but I've only seen 2 episodes of Kino and even I know that she specifically refuses to acknowledge herself as male or female.
