In fact, if the Venus Statues were legitimately beauty/fertillity idols during those periods (Which is far from a certainty), it is because being obese legitimately and uniquely was healthier than being fit in that specific period of humanity. That would be prior to settled agricultural societies, prior to common food preservation knowledge, and during a glacial period of general starvation. After the Ice Age and during most of recorded history, beauty depictions most commonly were of unobese women--Sometimes thicker, sometimes thinner, but uncommonly "obese".
