How hard should the game be to beat?

Honestly, nowadays I prefer option 2, where yeah i'll die here and there, but it should take no more than like 3 tries to clear a section. Since i've become an adult with a full time job and other obligations, video game time is more precious so I don't like feeling like i'm "wasting time" by doing the same thing over and over and failing at it.

I've been playing Everything Or Nothing lately and the middle difficulty setting is like perfect. Some missions i've beaten in one go, some it's taken a small handful of times, but once I know the layout and what's coming, I beat it.

Option 3, otherwise I get bored. The Dark/Demon's Souls series was the perfect medium for me. It took me a few weeks to really understand the mechanics, but once I did, I could just build on them and keep chugging through. Yet, the games still kept me on my toes.

I like a game with a lot of challenge but with short iteration times so you don't have to spend months on it even though you die a thousand times

Various. Dark Souls is my cap for difficulty, it's fair and reasonable. I hate timed games, I don't like speed/pressure runs. The only series like that I enjoyed was the first two Dead Rising titles and they went and fucked that all up when they made the 3rd.

Generally if there is a choice of difficulty, I go with hard, not very hard unless it's the preset default.

Ninja gaiden black and dark souls + DMC on Dante must die are the right difficulty for me.
I only enjoy single player games if they are extremely challenging, otherwise i just get bored.
I dont think i am super particularly good at games, more that I just dont mind losing constantly.

i choose option 4.

Difficult to beat
A bitch to master

That's what I like.

Challenging enough to not get bored and lose interest but not so much that I become frustrated and quit playing.

It depends on the game genre. Some games like TES and fallout I leave on the default (pretty easy) difficulty because I'm more interested in exploring and trying new playstyles. Other games like racing/sports games I expect it to be tough to win and like when I have a season that mimics real life where it's a struggle (but achievable) to make the playoffs or win a championship.

Basically, the longer the playtime, the easier it needs to be.

Length and challenge aren't really the same thing, yet I feel as though you've lumped them together in the poll options.

Too easy or hard are both not enjoyable. And i dont like "The enemy can one shot you but it takes forever to kill the enemy".

If difficulty just means the enemy has more health and hits harder then i find it really lazy. I dont like "fuck you" difficulties either.

I'm the type of person who save-scums normal difficulty in XCOM so I guess I prefer my games easier.

On the other hand I sunk a lot of time into things like Bind of Isaac and FTL, as well as the Etrian Odyssey games.

It depends on the game design. If it's a good game then high difficulty is nice because it makes perfecting the mechanics even more rewarding. Then there's mediocre but really easy games like Witcher 3 where high difficulty is need for any challenge at all. (Edit: I mean the fighting/gwent gameplay not the game as a whole)

If it's something like NieR Automata where the gameplay is repetitive, cumbersome, or downright bad, crank that shit to easy so I can get through it

That's not necessarily difficult so much as awful game design

I was more referring to the length of time to complete things, not how long the actual game is.
